We’re looking forward to introducing you to David Alley. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning David, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I spend most days in my home recording studio working on new music. When I’m not doing that, I am most likely playing with the Richardson Community Band, the Plano Community Band, the Kings of Swing, or the Upswing Jazz Orchestra.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve spent most of my life in the Entertainment Industry. Ii have toured in various production roles with David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, the Carpenters, Freddie King, etc. I worked with Vari-Lite and Showco for 20 years. In my years with Vari-Lite, we were awarded several Emmys for our lighting products. I am also a member of the Recording Academy and was signed with Capitol Records as a singer in a rock band called Thunder.
I’m a native Texan, born in San Antonio and went to college at SMU where I received an MBA..
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I spent quite a few years as a professional photographer and hold a PPA Master of Photography degree. I have photographed many celebrities including Ariana Grande, Jennifer Grey, Elizabeth Gillies, Willa Ford, Erin Andrews, etc.
Unfortunately, due to a medical issue ( macular degeneration), I have had to give up my photography passion.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I think suffering is a valuable part of being alive. It teaches you to appreciate the good things that happen. It can teach you how to get up after you fall or fail.
Success is great; but you can’t take it with you and and it is temporary.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Volodymyr Zelenskyy!
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Ha! Being 80 years old, I have limited time left on this planet. I will keep doing what I’m doing as long as I can. My mission statement for the time I have left is simple.
“If it ain’t fun, I’m done!”
