An Inspired Chat with Denise Warner

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Denise Warner. Check out our conversation below.

Denise , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My wife and I just moved from London to the south coast of England on the English Channel. So, my new thing is wake up, brush teeth, absolutely forget about doing anything with my hair, get dressed, turn the coffee maker on, feed the cats. Then I get a thermos of hot coffee and take a brisk walk right to cliff’s edge at the end of our street in the bracing, gusty winds and look at the waves crashing. Never in my life did I think we’d ever live so close to the water. But we did it. No regrets, loving this new slower pace and scenery.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Denise Warner and I’ve been a podcaster since 2006. I’ve had a successful ground breaking LGBTQIA show from 2006-2018, trail blazing a path for more queer podcasts along the way. I took a small break from 2019-2020 and came back with a new show in 2022 and it’s a slow burn, but being patient and having faith it’ll take off. Similar concept to the old show but with more emphasis on helping spotlight LGBTQIA’s creatives.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
One of my first podcast jobs was hosting a raunchy show for a new racy website. I enlisted my friends to be a part of the show and after 28 weeks, the owner asked me if I’d ditch the friends “because they were too fat and not what their audience would be interested in if we started doing live events”. He proceeded to push a contract in my face to sign for another 30 weeks. I pushed it back and said after the last two shows, I was done and taking my friends with me. He pleaded saying we were the number one show on the site and in the moment and I said “Even more reason to walk.” I didn’t want to work for people who were so superficial and who didn’t recognize talent over what they perceived as “the right look.”

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I think it’s the usual “what will people think?” fear that creeps into my head when I’m doing anything.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That clicks and likes reflect success.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
It used to be feeling at peace was a day to myself. Now, I try and find a moment of peace every day and be mindful of it.
