Devin Franklin shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Devin, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Either dancing into a sweaty frenzy in my bedroom or going on a much needed walk when the weather permits.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey, y’all, my name is Devin Tyrique Franklin. I’m a sibling, eldest child, partner, and friend born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. The work I do is cultural sustainability and intellectual expansion through theatre as my main artistic medium. I know to be true that the stories we tell each other and ourselves significantly influence the lives we lead, and I use this understanding to highlight stories that soften the collective towards one another. I’m deeply interested in how the macro influences the micro– how systems color our most intimate relationships. I utilize my southern hospitality to bring ease into the space as a means of encouraging generative risks.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I used to believe that I, as an individual, was unworthy of being celebrated. I would consistently prioritize the group over myself, my needs, and my opinions. I think there is merit in collective thinking, but I am shrinking myself less and less the older I get because standing out also holds immense value. Needing to feel special is human and I’m unlearning the shame I associated with that aspect of my humanity.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
No one is you and that is your power.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
My mom. She is arguably the most spiritually sound, humorous, and generous person I have the honor of knowing.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m able to provide for the ones I love — not just materially, but emotionally as well.
