We’re looking forward to introducing you to Eric Cooper. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Eric, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
When I get into my world of writing, I am so trapped in the story that I lose track of time. But as I go further into the writing I find more aspects about myself and the feeling of true freedom and enjoyment. When you write from your heart you tap into your soul and consciousness.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Eric M. Cooper and I’m not just a writer; I’m a true architect of stories, shaping narratives across a diverse range of mediums. As a published novelist, comic book scribe, and independent filmmaker, I possesses a unique ability to bring vibrant worlds and compelling characters to life. Beyond my own creative endeavors, I’m also the visionary behind Black Label Comic Con, a dynamic comic book convention serving the Philadelphia area.
I focus on crafting stories and events that positively impact people’s lives. This commitment extends to my most recent role: counselor to fellow writers. I find immense satisfaction in advising and guiding other creators, helping them hone their narratives and bring their own visions to fruition.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before I became the multifaceted creator and entrepreneur I am today, I was, in my own words, “a visionary but only in mind, not on paper.” I’d describe that period as quieter, more introspective, where my unique thinking and perspectives truly set me apart.
Rather than being deterred by closed doors, I saw them as catalysts for creation. When faced with denied opportunities, I chose to forge my own path, building the very platforms I needed. This spirit of Black ingenuity, which I truly believe is a powerful force, is central to my journey. I see myself as a proactive problem solver, not someone who contributes to problems, and that philosophy clearly underpins my work in novels, comics, film, and the thriving Black Label Comic Con.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
Overcoming Adversity: My Journey to Self-Acceptance
I’ve faced two significant pains in my life. The first was struggling with my weight, reaching an unhealthy 285 lbs. The other, more personal battle, was confronting my sexuality as a gay man.
When I was overweight, I was constantly aware of my physical appearance and deeply disliked how I looked. But then I stumbled upon a website about cosplaying, specifically Spider-Man costumes. That discovery truly changed my life and motivated me to embrace a healthier lifestyle. I ended up losing over 80 lbs and became an active part of the Spider-Man cosplay community. Now, hitting the gym and eating responsibly are just part of my routine.
My second pain, coming to terms with being gay, was a much more difficult journey. I wasn’t out earlier in life, and it was hard to truly be myself until I learned to let go of what others thought of me. Once people found out, their support was overwhelming. They even told me my aura was too powerful not to live authentically.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
The person I admire most is a fictional character: Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man. While his powers and abilities are undeniably cool, it’s his personality and unwavering commitment to society that truly captured my heart. Through every triumph and tribulation he faces, Peter Parker consistently maintains his strong moral compass, offering a profound sense of hope not only to the characters within his world but also to us, his readers.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I’ve come to understand that one crucial element often missing in society is the courage to be your authentic self. We were created as individuals, not as followers of the crowd. Each of us possesses our own unique light to shine, and if we don’t, it diminishes humanity as a whole. People who simply follow the crowd dim the very individuality that makes them unique, and that’s something I absolutely refuse to subject myself to. My message is simple: be you and stand out.
