We’re looking forward to introducing you to ginnie cappaert. Check out our conversation below.
Hi ginnie, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I have definitely been walking a path in regards to life and my art career which seem to mesh together and are inseparable. Yet wandering is something I like to do to and consider ‘the path’ that I have been on has contained many ‘wanders off the path.’ That’s life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Thrilled with the life I lead. I am a full time visual artist with a studio/gallery in Door County, Wi and Santa Fe, NM. My art career started when my 3 now grown children were babies and now I have 2 grand babies which means this has been a path I have been on for over 30 years. During the summer months I am in Wisconsin where I own Cappaert Contemporary Gallery and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings in my gardens, water views and forests. In the winter you will find me in Santa Fe, NM where I co-own Materiality which is a contemporary gallery in the heart of the Canyon Road arts district.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents (self-employed woods worker) and my ex-husband (self -employed dairy farmer) probably influenced the importance of hard work. I know nothing else. Other than a nine year career with the County Clerks Office, I have been self employed my entire life. I know the hard work it takes and the sacrifices. I also know the benefits and pride one can take when you own your own business.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Giving up isn’t in my vocabulary. However, the thought of giving up probably enters my mind daily. ART is hard work. Every day in the studio there are problems to solve and nothing really comes easy but I must enjoy it or I wouldn’t have continued. Making a business (or 2) with your art also isn’t easy. People don’t always understand the many responsibilities and the bookwork that come with it but there isn’t anything else that I would rather do.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I am genuine. What I do, how I act, things I say are always the real me. I do not like to be in ‘the lime-light’ but I do understand the importance of social media and interacting with art collectors. Art can be very personal and owning my galleries allows me to interact with the collectors making the entire process more interesting for both myself and the collector. I like a simple life and I am a country girl but I love to travel and open my mind and world to that of others. The world is one big canvas and I draw from my surroundings as inspiration.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I am out in nature. Especially hiking or exploring the forest or the high-desert. Sitting on my deck watching a sunset over the water isn’t too bad either.
