We recently had the chance to connect with Jason Melhorn and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I take the greatest pride in cultivating a relationship with Jesus, a journey that remains unseen by others. Through this relationship, I have discovered my true purpose and have embraced a life guided by meaning rather than fleeting pleasure. In comparing my past experiences, I have learned the stark contrast between destructive pursuits of pleasure and the inner peace that comes from living with intention. Although I possess fewer material possessions now than during my pursuit of pleasure, the priceless realization that joy can be found in any circumstance has enriched my life immeasurably. I now strive to become the best version of myself, actively engaging in teaching and leading my team in the realm of leadership. Recognizing that I can only change myself, I aspire to influence others positively, demonstrating that transformative change is always possible, regardless of one’s past actions, through a commitment to learning from and about Jesus. With Him by my side, I am confident that all things are within reach.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
When it comes to what breaks bonds between people, I believe that fear of conflict and a lack of H.O.T. (Honest, Open, and Transparent) conversations are key factors. Additionally, a lack of empathy, concern about how others perceive us, and engaging in arguments can also contribute to the erosion of trust and connection between individuals. Once trust is compromised, honest communication diminishes, and feelings of estrangement can creep in, further damaging the bond.
To restore these broken bonds, it is essential to confront and overcome the fear of conflict and commit to practicing honesty in our interactions. Taking ownership of one’s role in the breakdown of the relationship is important for personal growth and healing. Moreover, reflecting on the grace we have received and the sacrifices made by others, such as Jesus, can inspire us to engage in open, honest, and transparent dialogues to rebuild trust and connection. It is through these vulnerable and authentic conversations that we can pave the way towards reconciliation and renewal of relationships.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
In reflecting on my experiences of suffering, I have come to realize that the lessons learned in hardship are unique and invaluable, providing insights that may not have been accessible through success alone. Around nine years ago, I earnestly prayed for wisdom, wishing to grow and evolve to avoid repeating past mistakes. However, the way in which this wisdom unfolded was not as I had anticipated, as God understood that simply granting success would not necessarily foster the growth and humility required.
The journey of suffering that followed was instrumental in granting me the wisdom I sought. It challenged my pride and ego and pushed me to confront my weaknesses in ways that success may not have. Through this process, I not only gained profound insights but also developed the courage to share my testimony and experiences with others. I have found strength in vulnerability and transparency, openly discussing the struggles within our businesses and acknowledging the lessons learned in real-time.
The scarcity of resources during these challenging times has underscored the importance of gratitude and appreciation for the blessings in my life, even amidst suffering. The learning journey has extended beyond professional growth, encompassing personal development and leadership skills within my family and community. I have come to understand that true wisdom is born from the fusion of knowledge and practical application, a blend that emerges from grappling with hardship.
By society’s standards, my journey may be viewed as a failure in terms of conventional success. However, I have embraced the concept that pain and suffering are not curses but rather privileges, opportunities for growth and endurance. Just as Jesus suffered for humanity, I recognize that life’s challenges are an inherent part of growth and enlightenment.
In the crucible of suffering, I have learned the value of G.R.I.T – Grace for oneself and others, Resilience in adversity, Integrity in actions, and Trust in the journey. These qualities have formed a solid foundation for my leadership philosophy, emphasizing the importance of empathy, authenticity, and perseverance in navigating life’s trials and tribulations.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
I have come to believe that many are overlooking the crucial aspect of emotional intelligence in their pursuits. While there is often a strong emphasis on financial outcomes and success metrics, the human element within organizations is sometimes neglected. The team members who drive these numbers are often overlooked or undervalued in the pursuit of results. At Benaiah’s Leadership Group, we have made it a priority to prioritize the well-being and emotional needs of our team. We strive to create an environment where individuals feel seen, valued, and heard, recognizing that personal struggles can significantly impact professional and personal spheres.
I am not saying this is therapy or that we should aim to fix people. At the end of the day, we only have the power to change ourselves. What I am advocating for is the importance of being there to listen and potentially share experiences we have walked through. This vulnerability is key to building trust and fostering meaningful connections within our teams and communities.
One prevalent misconception is the assumption that individuals inherently possess qualities such as empathy, teamwork, and effective communication. However, the reality is that we are born with innate selfish tendencies that need to be unlearned through intentional guidance and support. It is essential to invest time and effort in helping individuals develop emotional intelligence, learn the importance of putting others first, and engage in honest conversations that foster trust and understanding.
Taking inspiration from Jesus’ leadership style, characterized by service and selflessness, we are reminded of the power of prioritizing the well-being of others without expecting anything in return. True leadership is not defined by titles but by a way of life that values relationships, empathy, and compassion. By nurturing a culture that emphasizes these principles, we can cultivate a new generation of leaders who prioritize the holistic development of individuals, both personally and professionally. This approach not only benefits the organization but also contributes to creating a more balanced and harmonious society. By collectively embracing and teaching these values, we have the potential to positively impact and transform the world around us for the better.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe that I have finally discovered my true calling, the purpose that God has laid out for me. It has been a journey marked by challenges and trials, leading me through the fire where my resolve and dedication to my purpose were forged. Despite moments of doubt and weakness, I have emerged from this crucible with a deep understanding of my mission.
There was a pivotal moment when I was faced with the prospect of losing my ownership stake in the businesses I had built. Despite this uncertainty, I chose to stay and continue to nurture and empower the leadership team, recognizing that this was where my true passion and destiny lie. Even as I operate these businesses without ownership for the past seven months, I am upheld by unwavering faith in God and a commitment to exemplifying the leadership principles I teach.
This journey has been far from easy, and I have invested all I have into developing and supporting team members while striving to secure the future of the businesses. Through this process, I have distilled my beliefs into a guiding principle: “Leaders aren’t born, they are made; teamwork is cultivated through hard work, discipline, and vulnerability. Champions are defined by their actions when no one is watching, and character is honed through navigating life’s storms. Legacies are built on the foundation of one’s character. The greatest leaders attribute victories to the team and accept responsibility for losses, shaping the legacy they leave behind.”
As I navigate this path, I am humbled by the opportunity to mold future leaders and contribute to something greater than myself. This journey of self-discovery and purpose alignment has reaffirmed my belief that true fulfillment comes from following one’s calling, even when the road ahead is uncertain and challenging.
