We recently had the chance to connect with JD Shultz and have shared our conversation below.
Hi JD , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day is waking up filled with gratitude for the ability to create the artwork and music that’s lurking inside of me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is JD Shultz. I’m a Los Angeles–based professional artist, musician, and philanthropist whose creative journey has spanned over four decades. I’m known for my bold, imaginative paintings and heartfelt music. I’ve built a career rooted in passion, authenticity, and the belief that art can transform lives. My work has reached thousands of collectors worldwide, and my music continues to inspire with its raw honesty and spirit. Beyond my own creations, I’m dedicated to using my art, music, and platform to uplift others—championing causes that matter and striving to make a meaningful difference in the world. Creativity isn’t just a career—it’s a lifelong mission to spark hope, connection, and positive change.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of the topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My very first art show was on the bluffs of Santa Monica in 1987. I brought every painting I had, and by the end of the show, they were all sold. That moment gave me my first real feeling of power—that art could move people, connect us, and even support me as a way of life.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self: trust your gift, stay patient, and know that every step you take—whether it feels like success or struggle—is shaping the artist and person you’re meant to become.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My close friends would probably say I’m deeply creative, loyal, and passionate—someone who always brings energy, color, and heart into every space. They’d say I’m not just an artist but also a connector, someone who lifts others up, believes in them, and makes them feel seen. And they’d likely add that I’m a dreamer who actually has the courage to chase those dreams.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
People would tell the story of how I lived my life through creativity—how I poured my heart into every painting, every song, and every connection I made. They’d say I wasn’t afraid to take risks, that I built a life around my art when most people thought it couldn’t be done. And they’d remember me not just for what I created, but for the way I made them feel—encouraged, inspired, and reminded that passion and kindness can truly make a difference in the world.
