An Inspired Chat with Karen Landon of Sherman Oaks

We recently had the chance to connect with Karen Landon and have shared our conversation below.

Karen, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I start the day by either taking a ballet class or going on a long walk and then I’m in my studio making jewelry.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My passion is designing and making jewelry. It’s been this way for as long as I can remember. My unconventional way of metal smithing harkens back to the medieval style. The artisan look is what I prefer.
My current designs are more of a heavy silver look sometimes with colorful stones but many times just metal. I only work in sterling silver for now. Maybe one day I can work in gold. That’s a dream of mine.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I can’t say that I ever felt powerful but I felt proud when my wholesale business started doing well enough for me to support myself and stop having to work a regular job.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When I couldn’t compete with the imported goods flooding this country I had to tell myself to keep on doing what you do.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
My goal is to make jewelry that people can’t resist buying.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Because my metal smithing is my passion it is also my life. I have to do it like it’s an addiction. Whether my designs are praised or not I will always have to design and execute my pieces.
