We recently had the chance to connect with Katie Holland and have shared our conversation below.
Katie, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
That the hardest part of being an author is writing the book. That’s typically the easiest part. Getting your name out there is the hardest. Since it’s a mostly solitary endeavor, it can be very hard to make the connections you need. Most of us rely solely on social media to get noticed.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Katie Holland, author of children’s, young adult and romance books. It’s a little unusual for an author to write in such different genres, but I like to read all sorts of books, so I write them as well.
I started writing at a very young age and was first published in our county anthology when I was six. I’ve had the bug to write ever since. I would always write little stories and one day my family finally convinced me to write a novel. I wasn’t sure I could do it, but three years later I had written my first full length book and was in disbelief that I’d actually done it. Many years later, I now have nineteen published books and many more to come.
I recently submitted my first book to a traditional publisher and I hope they love it, but nor now I wait to hear something. I have the first book in a new series that released on Oct 3 and started writing the next book in the series. I’m also working on another children’s Christmas book as well as the second book in my cozy small town series. My head is full of endless ideas.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents. They both worked hard and instilled their work ethic in me. From the time I was young I had chores that had to be done and done right. We lived on an acreage so there was always something to do, and even as kids my sister and I had to help. Then I hated it, but now I’m grateful for what they gave me.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t let what you look like hold you back. You can do anything you set your mind to and you will find the love you deserve.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. What you see is what you get with me. I’m terrible at hiding my emotions. I’m pretty much and open book with everyone.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
Not finding ways to travel more. I love seeing new places and being inspired by them.
