An Inspired Chat with Lanell Gray of Atlanta ga

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lanell Gray. Check out our conversation below.

Lanell, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me right now involves working on music production, collaborating with other artists, refining my skills in Logic, and managing projects at my studio, Tha Mini Lab.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Lanell Gray, a music producer based in Atlanta, Georgia, and the founder of my studio, Tha Mini Lab. I create and produce music across genres like hip hop, rap, R&B, and retro-inspired styles, collaborating with artists and composers to bring their musical visions to life. What makes my work unique is my focus on blending technical skill with creative storytelling, crafting sounds that feel personal and memorable. Right now, I’m working on original beats, retro NES-inspired music, and collaborative projects that push the boundaries of modern music production.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My family saw my potential and love for music before I fully saw it in myself, supporting me in every way and teaching me music when I had doubts, giving me the reassurance that in this lane, success is what you make of it — which inspired me to go back to school for my music production degree to gain even more insight.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes — there were moments when I almost gave up, especially when self-doubt crept in and the path forward felt uncertain, but the support from my family and my decision to go back to school for music production helped me push through and keep going.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the music industry tells itself is that talent alone is enough to succeed. The truth is, success takes a mix of skill, strategy, persistence, and building genuine relationships — things that don’t always get highlighted in the spotlight.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think people might misunderstand my legacy by focusing only on the music I release, when in reality it’s also about the creative impact I’ve had behind the scenes — helping artists shape their sound, mentoring others, and pushing the boundaries of music production.
