We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lisa Kay Kovilic. Check out our conversation below.
Lisa Kay, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Walking in nature. It’s fall in the midwest and I’m mesmerized by the vibrant leaves. Whenever I am stressed out, overwhelmed or need a boost of serotonin, I turn to nature to heal me. When I step outside and breathe in fresh air, my nervous system begins to calm, my thoughts slow down, and my stress starts to melt away.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Lisa Kay, a headshot, branding and lifestyle photographer. What sets me apart from other photographers is that I truly care about my clients. I’m not just capturing your photo, I’m capturing who you are in this moment. Whether it’s a business owner, a professional or a mother with her child. I truly get to know my clients so they are comfortable to show me their real smiles and I, in turn, can give them photos they are proud to show off.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I’m an artist. School never came easy to me, but art class was where I thrived. I loved everything about it. I was told at a young age that art is a “nice hobby” and not a profession. After years in the corporate world I finally found a career that is creative, artistic, helps others and pays my bills – it’s a dream come true!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are strong, trust yourself. I grew up in a family full of opinions and, as the youngest, I always just went with the flow, never fully expressing my own opinions. I wish I could tell my younger self to speak up, you are stronger than you know.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes and no. Like many, I struggle finding the balance between my public persona and my personal persona.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Time is fleeting, take more photos. I have had some people reach out because their loved one passed away and I was the last person to take a professional photo of them. In the end all we have are our memories. Photography is our link to those who have passed.
