We’re looking forward to introducing you to Machiami Kamara . Check out our conversation below.
Hi Machiami , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
It will always be hanging out with family and friends. Whether that means watching a late-night movie together, or heading to the park across the street from our house to play badminton. Being with family and or friends always brings me joy and lets me forget about all of my worries.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Machiami! I like to think of myself as your modest-fashion bestie who’s obsessed with showing that you don’t have to sacrifice style or your values to feel confident and chic. I create content that merges luxury, streetwear, and minimalism, all with a hijab-friendly twist. What makes my brand unique is that I don’t just stop at outfits. I’m really passionate about showing modesty as a lifestyle, whether it’s through travel, experiences, or everyday rituals. Lately, I’ve been working on expanding my community space, Veiled Visionaries, which brings Muslim women together through events, book clubs, and challenges. It’s a blend of creativity, sisterhood, and empowerment, all while keeping fashion fun and accessible.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Ooo, love this one. Honestly? My inner perfectionist. For so long, I thought everything I created had to be flawless before it could see the light of day. But perfection slows you down, and sometimes it even silences your voice. These days, I’m learning to embrace the messy, the authentic, and the in-progress. Perfection served me when I needed discipline, but now it’s time to release it so I can grow with more freedom.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d look her straight in the eye and say: “Sis, you are already enough. You don’t need to shrink or fit into someone else’s version of success. Your uniqueness is the very thing that will open doors.” And maybe I’d sneak in a “throw those black hijabs away and play around with color” while I’m at it.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
For me, it comes down to staying rooted in purpose. A fad is loud, fast, and often burns out just as quickly. Foundational shifts, on the other hand, feel timeless. They align with deeper values and keep showing up across seasons and generations. In fashion, for example, micro-trends are fun, but modesty as a lifestyle? That’s not going anywhere. I try to look at what has lasting impact on people’s lives versus what just gives a quick spark of attention.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
What would remain is my faith, my heart for community, and my desire to inspire. Titles and possessions are temporary, but the way you make people feel? THAT STICKS! If I had nothing else, I’d still be someone who believes in lifting others up, creating safe spaces, and showing that you can live beautifully and purposefully at the same time.
