We recently had the chance to connect with Maleah Hamilton and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Maleah, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What battle are you avoiding?
This is an articulately vulnerable question that stands out to me that I want to answer. A battle that I can admit that I am avoiding is the complications of commitment. I can honestly say I am avoiding this battle because I am afraid to fail. Initially you would think committing to something would eventually birth the result you want from your commitment, but I am avoiding that battle to an extent in the sense that I am afraid once I commit fully that I could fall short of others and my own expectations in producing pieces and work that people do not get excited for or want. I am afraid of how that experience could look on me and my strength to do the work it’ll require to continue to pursue success. More or less you could say it is a battle of getting out of your own way ultimately. This is a self created battle that deters you from even truly beginning. However there is beauty in failing and I am trying to learn the importance’s of it the more I succumb to the demands of this battle.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is MaLeah Hamilton, I am a proud Kansas City, MO native. I am the oldest of my siblings and I strive to be an example to them and myself in all I do. I love and value art in all its expressions including fashion. In that respect, I created and own Signature by mh, a brand I am building for a surplus of reasons. What I believe to be a special foundation for my brand is the inclusion, thoughtful curation, timelessness, versatility, standards and convenience of the products, along with the campaigns to all including myself. I initially began Signature as a reflection of my personal favorite pieces in fashion, but as I grow I am learning and creating a deeper admiration for this expression entirely. I am presently working on producing pieces, styles, designs, and productions that will be thought provoking, fun, exciting, desired and catering. I haven’t just yet but I am working on it brining all my ideas to life while also maintaining a simplistic side of it as well. I strive to make Signature a household name that doubles as a respected, but loved brand that will stand past my lifetime.
I do want to note to the readers that I was once Signature by Lee, it is now Signature by mh, growth 😉
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I have to say my earliest memory of feeling powerful was in elementary and middle school. I pin those memories in the aspect that I was able to respect, be involved, and co-exist easily, very happily, at such a young age with a variety of environments. I had friends of all dynamics. I was able to connect with, learn and enjoy activities and people of all interests. I knew than that I was a versatile individual that didn’t conform to one specific genre. I had an expansion of enthusiasms and knowledge that kept and keeps me evolving in more spaces that I hold in high regards and respect.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Something that suffering has taught, sometimes still does, and will continue to teach me is that life, hand in hand with time, waits on no one. That you could do it or make excuses or pace yourself, etc., but life and time are going to continue regardless. You are valid and matter, but you have to keep being valid and mattering with the suffering, you can not let it manipulate or trick you into standing still for too long, because you will look up and see that time and life, along with suffering has still continued in all its glory. Suffering is a fleeting teacher that returns with lessons throughout life.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is the real me, I suck at trying to be mysterious for the most part LOL. I try sometimes though. It’s important to me that I am who I am at all times, so people do not get shocked by my personality or perspectives and what not. In the same instance however we are all growing and evolving constantly, so in that manner I can still confidently say that public me is me and in some instances she has grown from certain time frames and seen things in a new perspective. In other instances she has grown in the same perspective, but with new mannerisms with how to articulate the expression of them.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope the story people tell about me when I am gone is my intentioned come up, the success and excitement from that first arrival. To my fall off, with the doubts, hardships, and learning i underwent to understand how I got there. Than to my reemergence that now has a new perseverance and discipline to continue in all its hesitations and uncertainty. Lastly I hope they discuss my pursuit even in the face of adversities that I created of my own and outside denominations I found a way through. I hope people can tell others about all the self doubt yet determination and hopefulness I had for the succession of this brand as an example to do what you say and work towards it regardless because you can AND we only get to see our dreams and goals once in this lifetime through the exhaustion of our own dedication for them.
