We’re looking forward to introducing you to Matt Roach. Check out our conversation below.
Matt, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiplies when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think a lot of people struggle with self doubt and anxiety. Especially if they don’t have a huge support system. You have to really learn to give yourself a break once in a while.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been fortunate enough to be a musician for many years. I’ve released 10 albums and I’ve had a chance to do a lot of touring. One of the things I’m most proud of is that every year I’ve performed an all original Christmas show. 2025 will be the 20th anniversary of doing the show. It’s a chance for people to hear songs that they haven’t heard a million times by now in every store during the holiday season. I released a five song EP called “The Santa Songs EP” back in 2005, which is also celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. I also released a double CD in 2013 called “Naughty and Nice” . It contains 30 original holiday songs. 15 “normal” songs and 15 comedy songs.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
One of the earliest memories I have of feeling powerful was when I learned that I could make people laugh. That happened at an early age and it was an amazing feeling. That feeling still stays with me every day. The idea of someone maybe not having the best day and you just say something goofy that makes them smile. There is no better feeling.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I don’t know if the thought of giving up ever really took hold in my brain. There’s endless amounts of times that I do feel hopeless. Whether that’s just the way my life is going or the way my music career is going or not going. It can be very depressing to pour all your heart into something and have nobody really care much about it. But, you either use peoples indifference to fuel you to keep going or you give up. It’s never an option for me to give up. I just rest, readjust my focus and try again.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is always “on”
If I’m performing on stage or off stage, it’s not much of a difference. I feel it’s always a show. My job is entertaining people. That could be by just making them laugh, listening to them or getting up on the stage and playing songs. When I’m by myself, I think I am more quiet and not as chipper. I’m much harder on myself than I am with anyone else.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
My dad died at 51 years old. Right now I am 53 years old. So the idea of me going has been on my mind since I was about 13. I know some people may remember me as someone who was cut off from the world a bit. For someone who spent his whole life as a performer, I don’t seem to socialize much.
But, I hope the stories they tell about me mostly was that I made them laugh. Every person in my life will have their own version of a story about me. Maybe I was kind to them or listened to them or maybe I didn’t keep in touch enough and tended to distance myself from people. But, I hope they all can agree on the fact that I always tried to make them smile when they needed it.
