Megan Braverman shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Megan, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
There are a few big misconceptions:
– Marketing and public relations are the same thing, they are not. They complement each other, but are fundamentally different disciplines.
– PR is just sending press releases. This may be the smallest part of what we do. Real PR is sustained thought leadership, strategic positioning and relationship building.
– PR delivers instant results. It doesn’t, it is cumulative. Yes, it can feel like instant gratification when your new PR campaign lands you a media placement, but you don’t see meaningful ROI after one placement. It’s consistent, sustained visibility that builds credibility and top-of-mind awareness.
– We can easily turn PR on and off. This is a damaging misconception. Some firms pause PR when they are busy or budgets tighten, but momentum and credibility don’t work like that. Stopping and starting erodes everything you’ve built. Consistency matters more than anything else.
– PR doesn’t contribute to my bottom line. Firms underestimate how PR supports business development and the direct line to revenue. Media coverage is not for vanity pieces; it builds visibility and authority that converts prospects into clients. Also, when someone is searching for a law firm, they gravitate toward names they recognize.
– PR is just Business Wire or PR Wire. This might be the most offensive misconception to publicists. In reality, we never use the wire – and to be clear, the wire isn’t PR. True PR requires an entirely different skill set: building relationships with journalists, understanding media cycles and timing, and translating complex topics into compelling, newsworthy stories.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the Owner and Principal of Berbay Marketing & PR, a national agency specializing in law, real estate and finance. We don’t just build visibility – we build your business. We create the visibility and credibility that fuels revenue growth for our clients. We are equally committed to our people. We take our work seriously, but we also believe it should energize you. When people love what they do, it shows in the work. That’s not just philosophy – it’s how we operate every day.
This year, we were honored to be named the Top Public Relations Agency in The Recorder’s Best Of 2025 rankings, and selected to Los Angeles Business Journal’s LA 500 list, recognizing the most influential leaders and impactful executives in Los Angeles.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My mother. She taught me to be confident, independent and tenacious – pillars that have made me the person I am today. Something special I’ll always remember was her never making decisions for me. No matter how hard or how much I wanted her to make the decision for me, she chose to only support me in those moments, allowing me to choose for myself. This let me grow in my own way and endure life moments.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Every single day! In being a business owner and a mother of two. A tough campaign, a tough client, or a tough day happens all the time.
If you are not experiencing moments where you want to give up, you are probably not risking enough. But feeling like giving up is just a mere moment in the process.
In the end, I never give up. I pause, reflect, maybe scream into a pillow and then regroup. You persevere and get through it. There is no road map for any of this. Struggle away, but don’t let the struggle be the conclusion.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
This is always evolving, but right now I’m focused on centralizing Berbay’s data to drive smarter, faster business decisions. We have so many valuable data points—profit/loss, client profitability, overservicing, prospects, leads—but they weren’t connected in one place to deliver real insight.
I’ve been building an infrastructure that unifies our data, and it’s going to be game-changing. I can now see how everything relates and make better, more informed decisions.
Every business owner should be thinking about this. Your data can’t live in silos; it has to work together. Decisions shouldn’t be made on gut instinct when the information exists. You just need the right technology in place to surface it.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not spending time with my children and family. I’ll never look back and wish I had spent less time with them. A speaker I once heard said something that really resonated with me: “People think I’m doing it all—running a business, raising a family, managing a household—but you’re always sacrificing something. If you’re with your kids, you’re sacrificing work, and vice versa. Others don’t always see that.” And that’s so true, but I’ll never regret choosing time with my kids. They are my highest priority.
I’m also a big believer in self-care and investing in myself. And that goes beyond the day-to-day basics. To me, it means making space for hobbies and passions that fill my cup outside of work. That balance allows me to show up better as both a mom and a business owner.
