Melissa Nordhoff shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Melissa, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Paddleboarding. I love the silence and peacefulness of the lake and being enmeshed in nature.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As a writer, all of my works are inspired by my life experiences. I pour my passion, joys, fears and frustrations onto the page. The Ruby Finch Mystery Series was spurred by my feisty grandmother’s life and her grand funerary adventure when she passed. In the character of Evie, I tried to capture my grandmother’s essence. The series is set in my hometown and Lancaster County. This series is fun and lighthearted–which everyone could use more of in their life.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
As a precocious and unusually small child (I’m only 4’10” now) I was bullied throughout my school years. Being always picked last for sports, patted on the head even as a teen, overlooked in a crowd of people made me feel less than. It wasn’t until I started my own business that I realized my voice matters and I can lead an impactful life. Through a promotion I created (Best Kept Secrets Tours), I have been able to support small businesses and raise over $162,000 for local non-profits. Through my writing, I hope I’ve entertained readers and inspired them to cultivate connections with friends and family. I now embrace the power I have to be the person I want to be and spread positivity in my little corner of the world.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I wholeheartedly embrace the acronym AFGO (another fine growth opportunity). Without a doubt, the struggles in my life sparked my emotional and personal development. I learned I am strong. I learned I am fierce. I learned I am able to handle whatever comes my way, one day at a time. And those lessons have reduced my fear and worry. I know I WILL be able to deal with all of life’s challenges.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
Reincarnation. I do believe we have many lives to get it right. We’ll keep coming back until we’ve been able to learn the lessons we need to learn; until we’ve evolved enough for our soul to be absorbed into the universal power–the source of all living things. Many happy returns!
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope they say I loved fiercely, had an adventurous spirit, and made a positive impact on those I came in contact with. An Emerson quote is my personal mantra: To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
