An Inspired Chat with Monique Madison of Kalamazoo, Michigan

Monique Madison shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Monique , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Recent moments that made me feel proud where when I was on iheart radio and Fox 2 news promoting the Serial Showgirl series and my new sitcom The Agency (now streaming on Tubi), hosting Pride Festivals ranging from Kalmazoo to Royal Oak, and fundraising for local LGBTQIA organizations to give back to my community.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Monique Madison and I have done the art of drag for the last 30 years. I am the one of the owners of The Kunty Kittens entertainment group, a house diva at Five15 in Royal Oak Michigan, the author of The Serial Showgirl series, and the star of a new comedy sitcom called The Agency now streaming on Tubi.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I would say the relationship that best shaped me was my connection with my mother. She was my best friend, biggest cheerleader, and the person I idolized the most in life.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Listen, being a drag queen is not easy. Half of the entire world thinks my existence is wrong or sinful. Everyday I wake up to hate and bigotry. I have thought many times of hanging up my heels, but then that voice deep inside me says SCREW THAT and that the world needs people like me to live loud and transparent, for others to see themselves, and hopefully inspire them to be themselves.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friend would say the most important thing to me is my incredible husband Jose. He is my number one priority and I would not have the success I do without his love and support. He is amazing.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
That I am not only a drag queen! I am a husband, a son, a friend, a stand up comedian, an author, an actor, an activist, and a human being.
