An Inspired Chat with Monk Turner

We recently had the chance to connect with Monk Turner and have shared our conversation below.

Monk, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Creating a concept album and shaping it track by track pulls me into a space where time disappears. When I uncover the story inside each song I fall into the same creative flow that first drew me to making records. Every session brings me back to the part of myself that works with curiosity and joy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a musician songwriter and producer. For more than two decades I’ve been creating concept albums that revolve around a big idea with each song connecting back to that theme. I love building complete works through music and each project becomes its own little universe with its own sound and personality. Collaboration is central to my process and I’ve worked with artists from all over the world to bring these albums to life. My catalog spans many styles because I let the concept shape the sound.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I’ve learned the most from the artists I’ve collaborated with over the years. Working with people from so many different cultural and musical backgrounds has taught me that creating good music comes from listening, trusting the process and staying open to ideas.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
I used to think I had to make everything sound perfect, believing that flawless execution was the goal. I’ve learned that letting go of perfection often makes the music more soulful. When I allow mistakes, spontaneity, and imperfection to shine, the songs feel alive and honest. I’m especially proud of my latest release, Holiday Party! It is full of first takes and has an honesty that I think makes it more enjoyable to listen to.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Concept albums!

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Moisturizing.
