We’re looking forward to introducing you to nathan timmel. Check out our conversation below.
nathan, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think people believe stand-up comedy is a merit-based business.
It’s not.
It’s about relationships.
If a club owner, or manager, or agent likes you, they’ll work with you.
It has nothing to do with originality, or ability, or honesty…
I believe the music industry, and acting, and pretty much every “artistic” pursuit is like this.
Until Bronny James entered the NBA, sports was the last refuge of ability over who-you-know.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a stand-up comedian who specializes in storytelling.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Becoming a father changed me in ways I’m still figuring out, and it’s been thirteen years. I used to have an ego, and think about me, me, me… Now, I do everything for my kids.
It’s a cliche, but it’s true.
The instant you have someone you’re responsible for, you stop worrying about yourself, and you start worrying about them.
Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
Yes, Kaboom cereal.
I posted about it on TikTok recently, and everyone was confused.
How they didn’t know about the deliciousness of clown-based cereal is beyond me.
Especially given the prominent cameo Kaboom got in the movie Kill Bill.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That talent matters.
That ability matters.
That kindness matters.
The industry likes to pretend it’s honorable, but it’s not.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Being healthy.
I’d start drinking, possibly doing drugs… I’d smoke.
Live it up!
You’ve only got one life!
Right now, I’m not exactly a health nut, but I do my best.
But if I only had 10 years left?
I’d live life like there was no tomorrow.
