An Inspired Chat with Nicole Zamlout of Hillsdale

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Nicole Zamlout . Check out our conversation below.

Nicole, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I would say I’m doing a bit more wandering these days. But as the quote goes, not all who wander are lost.

There is a path with a destination at the end I’d like to reach, but I’m trying to let myself account for those little detours on an adventure that can lead to something wonderful that you’d never find otherwise.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! My name is Nicole Zamlout. I’m a fantasy author with Read Furiously, a lovely indie publisher right here in New Jersey.

I largely write short stories, poems, and novellas that explore the small, fantastical worlds that my brain conjures up at the oddest of times.

They aren’t your normal sword and shield fantasies (though there is some of that because I love it just as much as the next guy) but examinations of what stories even are and how we shape them each day. They also have a small dose of romance in them (some more than others for the romance readers out there).

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I used to believe that my stories were too small. That if I wasn’t penning the next Great American Novel I wasn’t really a writer.

But as I grew up and crafted my work more and more, as others read my stories and told me how much they related to them, as I found other authors who said so much with so little, I realized that the small stories are just as important to tell.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You have a voice that is meant to rattle the stars. Use it and don’t let others try and dull that light out.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
This one I actually did articulate in Tales From The Scrapyard; man made gods and gods made man, a cycle that has yet to be broken.

To me, stories and faith are so foundational to the human experience that, in some ways, it formulated the world as we know it from the mundane to the divine.

We tell them to explain such complex things and repeat stories from long ago despite the march of progress. To me, that in some form is both godly and human. And isn’t that a wonderous thing?

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was kind. That I made them smile when they needed it. That I told a few good stories that they carry with them in the pockets of their minds for days when the world is a little too grey.
