We recently had the chance to connect with Nim K. and have shared our conversation below.
Nim , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Have you stood up for someone when it cost you something?
That’s a great question; a topic not always touched upon or spoken about. I feel like every time you stand up for someone you lose something, but you also gain. I find that this specific phenomenon is a huge part of my ultimate existence. Rooting for the underdog and standing by people when everyone is against them is a moment I live for, but due to how intimate those instances can be at times I’d rather not be specific. Not all acts of kindness need to be broadcasted, but to answer the question plainly, “Yes” I have stood up for many a people and have lost, but also gained.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a 28 year old (autistic) woman living in the US trying to bring about a change in my community through music, creativity, kindness, enlightenment, and being the “example”.
My goal is to empower women especially of color like myself to reach heights and break down barriers put in place to hinder our success in an industry not designed for us to win on our own accord.
I believe that the conventional “fad beauty” forced into our minds and shoved in our faces at a young age is the root of a lot of our current day problems and wish to transform that ideology into something meant to ignite our progression over all as women.
I love being a women and understanding my worth to society and wish to give that same understanding to the average woman world wide.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I have always been, always am, and will always continue to be “Me”. My parents and family have always been very supportive of who I am. They may have not always understood it, but always encouraged me to be true to myself and to dance to the beat of my own drum.
Since I was born I have known who I am and always wanted to be. I do what I want. I will never allow the world to dictate who I am.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering unlike success has shown me what I am made of and who actually cares and loves me for me.
When your back is up against the wall, the well runs dry, and everyone disappears there is a clarity present that success could never conjure.
I thank The Lord Almighty for my pain and suffering every day due to the fact that it has brought me abundance, redirection, and a deep understanding of the different shades this beautiful life has to offer.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
“That we are not all the same we are not all equal”. Do I believe we all need to be treated with respect and human decency? Yes. Do I believe anyone’s life is less or more important, No. I don’t believe I am better than the next person, but I do believe that by giving us all the same trophies and telling us we are all equal due to participation alone is wrong, irresponsible, and damaging to our communities.
We are not all the same and we are not all “special” some of us were born to be stars and others were born to watch and I don’t think anything is wrong with that. What I do think is wrong is when you sell someone a dream as to not hurt their feelings or get them upset. We are all different and that’s amazing we all have unique talents that belong to us and us alone. We need to start coming to terms with the fact that not everyone was born to be the front runner.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I just hope what ever stories they tell I left them with kindness and warmth, but also bravery and valor.
