An Inspired Chat with Owen Brown

We recently had the chance to connect with Owen Brown and have shared our conversation below.

Owen, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think that people are struggling with being forthright, honest, and brave. We are seeing a craven felon take over our country, an authoritarian regime destroying democracy, and too few of us say too little. We don’t know what to do. But silence is not an option.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a fine art painter, I have been painting for many years. My paintings sit in collections in this country and abroad, I have been published in books and magazines, but I can tell you, oh reader, that nine out of ten of my paintings sit in my studio, and my children will have a bonfire, for it is my fate, as it is most painters, to paint more than sell. Perhaps I should market more, but then again, I would rather be painting!

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Indifference breaks the bonds. Affection restores them, as does compassion.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear of forthrightness – standing up for what I believed, regardless the consequences. Sometimes I know I am right, but I say nothing, do nothing. Sometimes I know something is wrong, destructive, evil, yet I do nothing. The powerful live on the tears of the poor and what do I do? Evil triumphs if we do nothing.

But we can always do something – we say we lack the bravery, but no one is brave. Everyone is afraid. Together we can conquer our fear, and act out. The hard part is doing that yourself. But life is made of hard parts.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Truth.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
Not feeling more deeply, not being more compassionate, being tied too deeply to a society-created self, which has been of no benefit for me, or others.
