An Inspired Chat with Rachael Reese of Charleston

Rachael Reese shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Rachael, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, yoga has become an integral part of cultivating joy for me lately. I love connecting with my body each day; acknowledging my breath, my bones, my crackles and pops. Yoga helps me find gratitude regardless of how my day is going or the moods I’m experiencing when I show up. I am humbled every day by my practice. It’s so layered! Physical health, mental health, spirituality, and community. That’s what I get from yoga. Time on my mat helps me show up in the world as a better version of myself.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Rachael Reese. I am a Charleston based fine artist and illustrator. My work is represented by galleries as well as a licensing agency. Through my artwork I am purposefully pursuing my passion for the intersection of culinary and fine art. I am inspired deeply by eating through the seasons and learning where our food comes from. I believe painting is the best method to capture my love of culinary delights because it is deeply personal, sensual, and accessible.

What’s happening next: I have an exhibition opening at Art & Light Gallery November 7th-29th, 2025. I am also popping up at Candlefish for their Maker’s Market in Downtown Charleston for the holiday season. You’ll be able to shop my prints and ornaments there for a limited time. I have never done anything like this before and I am so excited! To stay in the know be sure to subscribe to my studio newsletter, linked on my website.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My Auntie Pam! A creative visionary, her business “Lady’s Loft” hosts a craft fair every year near the holidays. There she sell her beautiful knit and hand sewn wares alongside many of her friends. Growing up, I always loved going and experiencing this maker’s market. When I was in college I sold my first prints and greeting cards at her market. It was the first time that I went through the process of printing, packaging, and pricing my work to display for sale. I felt like a real artist! To this day my Auntie Pam and Uncle Joey’s house is my favorite gallery of my work. They have always encouraged and supported me – before I took myself seriously. I love them so much and am so grateful!

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and trust yourself. You’re capable of more than you think.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Simplification and ease. Our society is constantly is trying to make our lives easier through technology and services. I don’t think that ease = happiness. I want to dive deep, research, linger, experiment and explore. I believe that often the most difficult work is the most rewarding.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
Illustrating a cookbook. It’s so intimidating but I know I must do it! I especially love cookbooks like “My Pantry” by Alice Waters – so thoughtful and informative. I’d be especially proud to create a book that had the same feeling.
