An Inspired Chat with Rachel Ross of Salt Lake City

We recently had the chance to connect with Rachel Ross and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Rachel, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I am a very excited rock climber. I’ve been working towards some hard-for-me climbing projects in the local area that have brought me both joy and pain.. but loving the process!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello there! I am a visual storyteller with a background in adventure sports and fine-art landscape photography. I’ve filmed in far-away lands for the likes of National Geographic, BBC, TIME, and more. Capturing raw emotion, relatable narratives, and brilliant people has kept me busy in the business of storytelling and creating beautiful imagery. I find I can make anything interesting, whether I’m filming a board-room meeting or a mountain summit.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I’m going to flip this, and ask myself the earliest memory ‘in my career’ of feeling powerful. That came about 10 years ago when I was editing an interview I filmed. I realized I had so much power to make that person sound and look intelligent by simply omitting or adding a few seconds. It gave me a grave respect for those who were editing on a large scale, and also instilled a responsibility in my own work to do the very best I could for those who did not get a say in the behind-the-scenes.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell myself to keep trying to find mentors. I would also tell myself to keep pushing without the need for approval.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I began a project in 2022 about a now-professional rock climber. She was starting to project a route that would be the hardest she’s completed, and would be a first for female climbers. She’s still working on it, through all that life has handed to her in the process. We’re going on our 4th year now, and I’m still chugging away at it, because all the many terabytes of footage that I’ve filmed would be meaningless without the final end.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely! I find so much contentment in putting in effort that I can look back on with pride. I think it’s one of the biggest blessings of the creative field – that there is no such thing as perfection because everything is subjective. It’s also the biggest curse for those of us who are perfectionists.
