We recently had the chance to connect with René Gibson and have shared our conversation below.
René, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
At the moment I’m currently in Puerto Escondido. I’ve been waking up to the roosters around 5:30am, I make coffee and ride my scooter down to the beach to check the surf/ have my coffee watching the waves.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is René, I’m 37 years old born and raised in New Zealand. I Tattoo predominantly between New York and Los Angeles, I tend to work in australia and new zealand once a year and have worked in europe/ the UK frequently over the past 8 years too. I paint in my spare time making mostly large scale abstract/ figurative works.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Finding sobriety and practising it each day.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I mean. they’re one in the same kind of? you can’t have one without the other. suffering only pushes me to work/strive/succeed. Yin and Yang and all that 🙂
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I just try to focus on what I like and what interests me. If I was to follow what others were doing or listen to industry shifts I wouldn’t feel authentic.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I made them laugh until their belly hurt.
