An Inspired Chat with Ron Placone of San Pedro, CA

We recently had the chance to connect with Ron Placone and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Ron, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think we’re all extremely concerned about the direction this world is heading. There’s no way people can look around right now and go, “yeah, this is great.” Here in the states, things keep getting worse and worse by the day. We’re amidst a fascist coup. I think, deep down, people are starting to realize it, but they don’t straight up say it. I think there’s a number of reasons for this…Maybe they don’t want to admit the person they voted for isn’t working out, maybe they just don’t want to accept it, I don’t know. I get it, it’s a tough pill to swallow, but it’s where we’re at.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Ron Placone. I’m a comedian/writer/filmmaker/podcaster. My movie, Left At Wall, recently won Best Feature at the ProToPost International Film Festival in Genoa, Italy. Left At Wall can be streamed on Apple TV, Amazon, Tubi, YouTube Movies, Google Play, and a bunch of other places. It can be purchased on DVD for those that dig physical media. My podcast, 1000 w/ Ron Placone is out wherever ya get your pods. On social media, I’m @RonPlacone on pretty much all platforms, and my website (ronplacone.com) has all tour dates and whatnot.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I’ve always been a curious guy who just wanted to pursue the creative passions that interested me. I’m still that guy. The only difference now is that it’s gotta be sustainable somehow, heh. And that part of it sucks. If you want to produce a stage play ya gotta fund it, same with a film, podcast, or anything. If ya want to tour there’s gotta be a ticket price, it is what it is. So I guess my answer to that question is, I’m just a more branded version of what I’ve always been out of necessity. Check the website!

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Honestly, 2024 was among the worst years of my life. I considered just packing it all in. Wiping my Internet presence and walking away from all of it. I had no idea what would be next, though. I thought about going somewhere in rural Italy and trying to find farm work or something like that. I didn’t consider it for very long. First of all, the chances of my wife being on board with such a thing were slim and reasonably so. Plus, I knew I’d be awful at it. I don’t have a green thumb!

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
What qualifies as thought leadership today is beyond frightening. People who we consider visionaries are mostly just those who were born rich and view the world as their playground. In the US, our political system is beyond corrupt so it attracts, for the most part, corrupt people to the job. There’s exceptions, of course, but for the most part, it’s a game that people with reasonable moral compasses can’t play, so you get people who don’t have said compasses. The result is a completely corporate captured government. Then there’s our bizarre obsession with work, which keeps the populace distracted. Of course, in many cases this is out of necessity as countless Americans are working 2 and 3 jobs just to survive. I think many smart people are giving credibility to that which shouldn’t be given such. And we’re seeing why it’s dangerous to do such a thing.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When have you had to bet the company?
Anytime I produce anything, whether it’d be a tour, podcast, stage play, film, stand-up clip, stand-up hour, I’m betting the company. I’m putting resources into a thing that the world will meet and they will either embrace or reject it.
