An Inspired Chat with Sarah Messner of Columbia

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sarah Messner. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Starting to get back on the school routine!

I set my alarm for 6:00am and me and my husband take turns getting the kids ready and out the door for school. This will be the first year that I will have both kids in school 7am-3pm. I do a burn bootcamp(or workout) around 7:30am and then edit during the rest of my day. I usually have a lot of editing so that’s the majority of what I do before the kids get home or I am running errands. Dinner and kids sports/activities are usually around dinner time and then we put the kids to bed around 7:00pm and we go to bed anytime between 9:00-10:00pm

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sarah Messner and I am the photographer behind Blue Belle Photography. I have been in business since 2021 in the Columbia, SC area. I am a lifestyle photographer and work with a lot of families, newborns, and couples. I just revamped my website and socials with some new branding. I went with a coastal vibe as I LOVE photographing people at the beach 🙂

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I would have to say my close friends aka inner circle. These women always hear me say “I’m sorry”, “do you care if..”, “can I..”, etc… meaning I am always careful with my choice of words and making sure people are okay with me and what I am doing. Over the years I have just reflected and come to realize that I don’t need everyone to like something I say or do. It is okay and you don’t have to be scared anymore or walk on egg shells. I am more confident in my choices and what comes out of my mouth.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Actually, during this job. There was a time when my kids were both under 5 and I was newer in the industry and imposter syndrome kicked in and I never felt worthy. It was in the “busy seasons” of the job where I found myself always wanting to give up. I lost time with my kids, husband, friends. I struggled, but I made it through and I am so glad I pushed! I allowed myself time to take breaks, breathe, and pray about it.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
“That it’s easy or it’s just a hobby.” Actually taking the photos is such a small part of running a successful business. Charge what you’re worth, run your media, and send those contracts. You put your time and effort into something you’re proud of.

“You have to be fully booked or have X number of followers” Setting boundaries with yourself to ensure you don’t overbook and get burned out needs to be a top priority.

“You don’t work a 9-5.” I do work from the moment I wake up whether it’s answering emails, calls, texts, DMs till the moment I go to bed. I am constantly working.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I would like to think my personality, my passion, my smile, my enthusiasm, my grit and how many pictures I deliver lol. I take care of my clients. I always overdeliver for everyone.
