An Inspired Chat with Shoni Alleyne of Brooklyn

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shoni Alleyne. Check out our conversation below.

Shoni, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I’m currently loving the Amazon Prime series, “The Summer I Turned Pretty.” I’m #TeamConrad for life lol. The reason I love the show is that it’s refreshing to see a young woman like Belly grow through her womanhood, ultimately finding her strength and confidence to become Isabel. I can relate.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Sure, my name is Shoni. I love quiet and slow mornings with caramel lattes. I’m a R&B singer-songwriter and audiobook narrator. I enjoy creating art that is honest and shows every emotion. I’m inspired by everyday life and fueled by the sun and the ocean.

I am a mom of two amazing daughters. They keep me updated on what is and isn’t hot lol.

I am the owner of Soulfully Written Productions, where we focus on amplifying the voices of underrepresented women in audio. I host the Beauty & Soul Podcast, which discusses the B-side of life, love, and business.

Currently, I am performing and celebrating my recently released EP, Shades of Blues, which was featured on Tidal’s Grown R&B playlist and Grammy U playlist.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I grew up a Jehovah’s Witness, so let’s start there. Early in life, I was taught to dim my light and not be my full, creative, inquisitive, and vibrant self. There was a box I was supposed to stay in and be happy with, but I never was. I am thankful for the early memories because I learned early who I did not want to be and where I didn’t belong. Once I woke up, I never went back to sleep.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
Believe it or not, recently! My Shades of Blues EP was born from pain. I have always used songwriting and singing to help me through difficult emotions. I wrote about some of the challenges I overcame living in my hometown, but ultimately, I sing and share how music can help us heal and return to ourselves. I know the power of my words and my voice. I use my power wisely.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, now it is. The more I learned about myself, the more I was able to reveal. I had to take time to get to know my voice, my wants, and my needs. Honestly, I will be peeling my layers back for a while, and I’m okay with that.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I am gone, I hope people feel like I touched their lives in a positive way. I hope they can think of a song, a conversation, a podcast episode, or something, and remember my heart for the community. I want them to be able to say my life and my work made them feel seen and valued.
