We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shrutee Tokekar. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Shrutee, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
What I feel called to do now is fully embrace the design path I’ve been building toward, particularly in evening wear and creating work that combines emotion, form, and technical precision. There was a time when I hesitated to take on projects that felt ambitious or uncertain, whether because of the complexity of the construction, the responsibility of creating something original, or the challenge of making my designs resonate professionally.
Now, I feel ready to step into that space. I want to explore ideas and techniques I might have been intimidated by before, experimenting with new silhouettes, intricate detailing, and ways to tell a story through fabric and fit. With experience and practice, I am becoming more confident and capable, and that growth allows me to take risks I might not have before. It’s about trusting my abilities, trusting my vision, and allowing myself to continue evolving as a designer.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Shrutee Tokekar, and I am a fashion designer specialising in luxury eveningwear. I began my journey in India, where I earned my Bachelor’s in Fashion Design and gained industry experience before moving to the United States to pursue my Master’s at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Experiencing fashion in both countries has broadened my perspective and strengthened my appreciation for precision and artistry.
While I have always been drawn to the allure and emotional impact of eveningwear, my current work focuses on the craft behind each piece. I enjoy refining fit, construction, and finish to create designs that feel romantic and enduring. For me, fashion is about creating meaningful work, where every detail contributes to the story a garment tells.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child growing up in India, I believed I already knew exactly who I was and what I wanted to do. Surrounded by vibrant textiles and meticulous handiwork, I assumed that my fascination with colours, textures, and fabric would naturally guide me into a career in fashion. My mother has always been a huge creative influence, and she still is. She is effortlessly talented and constantly creating, whether it is embroidery, quilting, or experimenting with new techniques. Watching her work instilled in me an early understanding of patience, creativity, and attention to detail.
Now, with formal education and hands-on experience, I see that passion alone is not enough. I have come to understand the complexity behind every garment, including the planning, technical skill, and narrative each piece carries. That perspective informs how I design today and helps me create work that is intentional, expressive, and carefully considered at every stage.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could speak to my younger self, I would tell her to trust her passion a little more. Even as a child, I was certain that I wanted to work in fashion. I spent hours playing dress-up games online and flipping through magazines, imagining the kinds of clothes I wanted to create. Yet the idea of turning that dream into a real career often felt intimidating, especially since nobody in my family had pursued fashion professionally.
My parents have always supported me, and knowing that now, I would tell my younger self that it is possible. With persistence, curiosity, and hard work, it all comes together. You just need to stay committed to your vision. Even then, I was already on the right track; I just needed a little more faith in myself.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A cultural value I protect above all else is respect for skill and the meaningful work that goes into making something truly special. Growing up in India, I was surrounded by fabrics and techniques that carry generations of knowledge and intention. Indian sarees, in particular, have always fascinated me. They are classics, remarkable in their detail, and each one tells a story through its draping, fabric, and design.
This appreciation influenced my thesis collection, which drew inspiration from the enduring appeal of the Indian saree and the regal attire of India’s royals. In that work, I explored how traditional draping and silhouettes could be reinterpreted for contemporary fashion while honouring the thoughtfulness, precision, and historical richness that make these garments memorable. Carrying that sense of care and emotional resonance into every piece I create is a principle I value deeply.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I am doing what I was meant to do. After completing my bachelor’s in India, I began my career in e-commerce fashion, which provided valuable industry experience. Pursuing my master’s in the United States allowed me to explore different facets of design, and I eventually discovered my niche in eveningwear. Working in bridal fashion also deepened my understanding of detail, structure, and how a garment can tell a story. Today, I focus on design with precision, considering every aspect of fit, construction, and finish.
Looking back to my childhood, when I spent hours imagining and creating, I can see that this journey aligns closely with what I was always drawn to. I have found a space that blends my passion and abilities, and while I feel I am on the right path, there is still so much to explore, learn, and create. For me, this is just the beginning.
