Syd Christopher shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Syd, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity. Everyone has off days energetically and cannot be expected to be “on” and “perfect” all the time. And everyone is learning new things everyday, no matter how smart they think they are. But how we act in our community and to others around us is vital in my eyes. Integrity is a way of showing you care enough about your community members to treat them well, with respect and love, that is my top priority.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Syd. I am a nail artist of 10 years and a soon to be tattoo artist. My main focus when it comes to nail art (and now tattoos) is illustrative work. I really love to get as crazy and detailed as possible on people’s nails. Now that I am getting into tattooing, I get most excited for anything I get to use a 9 or 11 liner for, I like it BOLD😎
One of my favorite aspects of being a service provider is the energetic exchange between me and my clients. I love having people come in at a certain energy level and then leave on a higher note, feeling happy that they have been cared for and listened to. I also love that when they leave I feel amazing that I was able to pamper somebody and give them the designs they are looking for❤️.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Well I would have been in the womb still, the moment you pop out there is always someone telling you who you should be and what you should do. In my mind it’s more about the journey to getting to a point where regardless of what you are being told, you focus on what is the truth for you. What do you want to do? Everything else is just noise, right?
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Endurance. You can’t give up because it’s hard and business is slow at first or at times. You find the willingness to do what you have to do to keep being able to do what you love most. I truly believe the world needs more artists and sometimes we just need to be reminded that the struggle is worth it and from struggle comes the most beautiful art. And don’t like scientists tell you that when you fail you get more tools to use for future success….or something like that?
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, it is very hard to be someone other than yourself. It’s tiring and your energy should really be reserved for creating your art. Also it’s free 99 to be yourself and not care about what others think.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
When I am in the middle of a project. Like mid paint stroke or tattoo line pull, or while I file up a crisp stiletto nail….Its usually the only time my mind is completely calm and at peace and not bouncing around with thoughts and anxiety. I love the feeling of working on an art piece and looking up and realizing you’ve been in it for hours, it’s almost meditation.
