Valerie Morehouse shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Valerie, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
I would have to say integrity would be something always very important to me. If clients or people in general dont trust you what else do you have? Integrity in the music business and everywhere in life is crucial.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
For those who don’y already know me, my name is Valerie Morehouse and I am a celebrity vocal coach based in Los Angeles, California.
I’ve trained some of the biggest singers in the world including Sam Smith, Olivia Rodrigo, Lainey Wilson, Sia, Gracie Abrams, Avril Lavigne, Alex Warren and many more .
I have a studio in Studio City, California where my associate teachers train hundreds of clients each week. I have a staff of 7 people total and have been training singers for more than 25 years.
What makes me unique is working closely with all the top Ear, Nose and Throat doctors around the globe to rehabilitate some of the hardest cases for singers with Nodules, Polyps, paralyzed vocal cords, muscle tension dysphonia, cancer and PTSD.
I wrote a book called “A Better Voice” available on Amazon which highlights many singers I’ve trained that have struggled and how I got them healthy and back in stage.
I also vocal produce records for artists with their producers and work their live shows upwards of 40,000 person arenas to make sure their entire show is vocal produced properly.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest moment of feeling powerful was when I was 10 years old. I came back from living in England for many years started fourth grade when my music teacher discovered I could sing beyond my years..
I discovered I had a raw talent to hear music, sing music in a way a grown person would approach it.
for me it was a gift that I didn’t fully realize until it started opening every door imaginable for me starting at the age of 12.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say anything to my younger self it would be stop worrying!!! Life brings us so many challenges and the worry and anxiety I started to feel whenI was 22 and just out of college was at times debilitating.
Always worrying about the future that you cant control anyway is exhausting.
I tell my students all the time worrying is just worrying it changes nothing. Be in the moment. Not where you were or where you are going but in the present moment always. That will help with anxiety and stress and you will become more mindful and present.
“Be committed to your process not attached to your outcome”
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is the real one.
I am a Capricorn through and through… An earth sign. What you see is what you get. That is in every situation and with every person.
I am the same person I was when I was young just a bit older and wiser.
It is always best to remember where you came from, be true to yourself and others.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am definitely doing what i was born to do.
I always thought I was born to be an artist or performer. My entire life I was on the trajectory to being a singer but when I turned 25 that all changed.
I had an overwhelming feeling I was supposed to be teaching and helping others find their voices. There were many singers getting injured singing so many live events as that where the revenue was coming from as CD’s were becoming obsolete and everyone was streaming or stealing music in their mid 90’s.
There was only speech therapists at the time but not true technical vocal coaches that understood anatomical training and rehab for singers.
I sat in with the top laryngologists in LA and learned so much that I knew I could combine coaching with rehab for singers and I havent slowed down in over 20 years.
