X.DARVI shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
X.DARVI, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I’m chasing my dream of being an established artist and not just known, but respected, deeply rooted in my craft, and free to create without limits. Funny enough, sometimes I wonder if the very act of chasing is what slows me down. Like, maybe if I stopped gripping so tightly to the outcome, it might all come together faster. I create because I love it, not because I’m trying to force anything. So if I stopped chasing, I think it would actually bring me closer to what I want…peace, flow, and maybe even faster alignment with the success I’m working toward.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is X.Darvi and I’m a multidisciplinary artist. I’m a painter, sculptor, and musician. At the heart of everything I create is a deep love for storytelling, especially through the lens of Black womanhood. My painting style is rooted in acrylic, with elements of cubism and a futuristic twist. I’m drawn to bright, vibrant color palettes, and I often paint portraits of Black women in their power; free, emotionally complex, and unapologetically themselves.
That theme means a lot to me personally, because for a long time I struggled with giving my own power away. Art became a way for me to reclaim it. Now I get to reflect that journey in my work, and hopefully help others feel seen in the process.
I also create small sculptures and write music, both of which tie into my visual work and allow me to explore emotion and identity in different dimensions.
Right now, I’m preparing for my upcoming solo show this August titled Intuition Only. It’s about removing the mask and becoming a more confident, vulnerable, and powerful version of yourself
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that felt she had to hide, people-please, and constantly stay in protection mode has served its purpose. For a long time, that version of me helped me survive. It kept me safe. And I honor her for that. But I’ve come a long way, and this next chapter of my life requires something new. It’s time to release that version and step fully into who I am becoming. Someone more open, bold, and willing to be seen. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being real and allowing myself to blossom without apology.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell her not to shrink for anyone who doesn’t see or value her beautiful soul. Life will get hard sometimes, and it’s okay to cry when you need to. That doesn’t make you weak. Just know that you’re stronger than you think, and you’ll rise every time. You’ve got this. I love you.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think one of the biggest lies is that you have to choose one thing and stick with it to be taken seriously. Especially in the fine art world, there’s this pressure to stay in one lane. For a long time, I thought I had to be just a painter, known only for my portrait work. But the truth is, I have too many creative gifts to box myself in like that. I’m also a music artist, a writer, and a storyteller. All of those parts of me are connected, and they deserve space. Limiting yourself for the sake of being “marketable” can actually dim the light you’re meant to share. I’m learning that the more I embrace all of who I am, the more whole and impactful my work becomes.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I have the freedom to move through the day on my own terms. When I’m not rushing or performing or trying to meet anyone’s expectations. Just being. Whether I’m listening to music, painting, or simply hanging out with my family, there’s a calm that comes from being present and not needing to prove anything. That’s when I feel the most like myself.
