We recently had the chance to connect with Annette Higgins and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Annette, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Well they’re all important and have to be put unto action all the time.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Annette Higgins. I’m a miliner, or hat maker. I make many types of headware, but most of my hats are for attendees of the annual Kentucky Derby. My hat creations are all of my own design and are made entirely by hand, fitted and customized for each client. I work with my clients to create a hat that fits well both physically and asthetically. I often match the hat design to a dress color or requested style. And, my clients appreciate the colloaborative nature of the engagement because it is much more that merely choosing and buying a hat.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Early on when I decided to become a headwear fashion designer, I took classes from some of the most recognized miliners in the world. Also, I learned how to sew by paying attention to my mother as she made and sewed dresses, and alsoto my father who designed and sewed shoes.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No, there was never a time when I gave up. I am able to keep going with whatever I set my mind to do.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I’m very true to my own ideas.

That my destiny was to bring joy, beauty, and happiness to this world through my art.
