We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Apiwe Bubu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Apiwe below.
Apiwe, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I believe I developed my resilience growing up in amongst one of the most resilient cultures and nations in the world, The Xhosa nation from which come Nelson Mandela, Trevor Noah, Black Coffee and other individuals of notable distinction. Much of the preparation including ceremonies and idiosyncrasies that permeate life growing up were much of what one has leaned on and continue to exude in a manner of speech when addressing the matter of resilience. Not to mention… I also went to boarding school at the age of 12…through the following years of tenure and experience it taught me much about varied human behavior and the ever fluctuating social dynamics outside the familial and comforts of family. Resilience was definitely necessary as a result.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I recently released a 5 track EP that exfoliates and bares true, the emblems of my self development, history and influences in the great track of my music growth and journey. Much of the sound and expression comes from a deep understanding of the many nuances of the music spectrums that have come to define the latter 21st century, namely Hip Hop. And in an ode of self sacrifice and nod to this most impactful sound I was able to fashion and put in justifiable modes, sounds of my own upbringing as a South African and the familiar tapestry of Trap music namely carved from the modes of Atlantas streets. In forging this fusion by way of performance, recording, producing and mixing I was able to create and release a unique palate un-abused nor familiar. In so doing I presented to the world Promised Land…available on all platforms.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe top of the qualities I would attest to would be persistence…without it, I wouldn’t be where I am “”Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not, nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not, unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not, the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The notion “press on” has solved and will always solve the problems of the human race.” Hence this quality alone can be viewed and is paramount to my success and has been most impactful in my journey. When it comes to skill, well that in every pursuit is ones own choice, in my case it was/is musicality by way of instrument proficiency, namely the piano and bass. Areas of knowledge would be music production and audio engineering. Of all these above has my path been forged and I would advise all in their early stages of development to be conscious of these to the degree that each applies to them.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
They made sure I was well educated.
