We’re looking forward to introducing you to audible yays (barb morrison & bart schoudel). Check out our conversation below.
Good morning audible yays , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
bart : that people think it’s glamorous when it’s really about being of service to the artist and long days of hard work
barb : that’s right and to even take it further it boils down to years and decades of hard work
bart : to get to where we are, you have to spend a lot of time honing your craft.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
barb : bart and i have both been producers since the 90s, working on a vast range of music. we met a few years ago while we were separately brought in on a project where neither of us were producing ! bart was the engineer and i was brought in as a songwriter.
bart : we’ve both worked with so many people and every once in a while you meet someone you really connect with so we knew right away we had to continue making music together.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
bart : coming up as an engineer it was about being invisible and being behind the scenes but until i started having the confidence to truly connect with the artist, that’s when my music got so much better.
barb : for me, it’s been about not worrying about fitting into a certain genre or trying to make the stereotypical ANYTHING. i like a lotta weird music but i also love pop music so leaving behind the notions that a song needs to sound “a certain way” has really made my craft better.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
barb : bring your real self to the table. it’s the best way to get your most creative honest message out there. the true you is what will connect you to others through your art.
bart : i’d tell myself : all your struggles will make you better
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
bart : that they care about artists
barb : i’d say that the biggest lie is that we “need” the industry. i’ve seen a lot of artists make it in the indie world by grass roots touring and building relationships. if you believe in your music you will get it out there by any means necessary.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
bart : right after a great song has been written and we realize we channeled that.
barb : same for me. when we’re in the flow and we can see the artist is tapped into something honest and we are helping make that happen
