I have come to realize over the years that burnout is both cyclical and inevitable. Once I understood that the next challenge became how to prepare for it so I could lengthen the time between burnouts, lessen their affects, and overcome them quickly. Burnout affects us all differently and the cycle is also unique to you and your profession so the remedy for it will also be different person to person. I do however believe there are some universal things that everyone should do to stay ready for it. Here are the top 3 things that have helped me. Read More>>

I think that burnout is bound to happen , it’s nothing you can do to get around it. Now with that being said I think there are things to do to learn to overcome it can vary because all people are different. What works for me may not work for you but everyone has something that can help them. For me when I experience “burnout” it develops from over stimulating myself while trying to reach a goal. I’ve made tendencies of when I lock on to what I want to create I have extreme “tunnel vision” so I need to know everything about everything but that’s just not true. Read More>>

I like to take breaks and go on Hiatus! I will go on a sabbatical and recharge myself. When I get to the point where I feel burnt out, I go on vacation or take a trip somewhere that I can really relax. I take my kids and we just GO! Self-care is very important, and you have to put yourself first. Spending time with family is also important. I recharge when I get around my family and visit my hometown in South Suburbs of Chicago. It’s important to me to take care of my mental because you only have 1 body 1 mind and 1 soul. So, you have to be the 1 to take care of you. Read More>>

Early in my career, I didn’t mind burning the proverbial candle at both ends and working long days for long periods of time. As I have matured in years, in many ways, I found that such overwork is both counterproductive and unsustainable. I have grown to understand that life is not about quantity of work and more about quality of life. Taking time to develop and nurture mind, body and soul is the key to a life well lived in my humble opinion. I read an interesting book recently which was a series of interviews with those who were blessed to reach the age of 90 plus. Read More>>

Let’s be real- the state of “burnout” is prevalent among countless hardworking people. But just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s normalized. Burnout is a term used to describe the emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion stemming from stress, which for many, can be work. I most commonly experience burnout when I lose a kitten in my care. I think, “Why? Why did I have to try so hard, do so much, care so deeply, just for my kitten to die?” Read More>>

The word isn’t burnout, it’s EPIC BURNOUT. It’s the type of burnout where you can barely get out of bed, and dream of running away to Ecuador, and then wake up one day and buy a plane ticket to Ecuador. Which is exactly what I did. Read More>>

I think for any workaholic out there, or anyone who is just consumed by work or extra circulars has the potential of reaching a point of “burnout”. For me, working pretty much seven days a week and always being one phone call, or just a text/email away from my clients and work has definitely gotten to an over-worked point where I just completed crashed. Not to mention, outside of work, you have so many other things you’re juggling whether it’d be your social life or maintaining your workout routine, whatever it may be. Read More>>

If you power through your body and mind’s call for help when you start feeling it, two things are going to happen: you’ll crash and you’ll put out subpar work that you (most likely) won’t be proud of and won’t have a positive connection with. I have past designs that were forced out as a result of burnout, and when I look back at them, I’m reminded of nothing but stress, imposter syndrome, etc. If you’re a professional creative and you’re trying to overcome burnout, learn to consume for the sake of enjoyment. Scroll through your social media feed for art to simply enjoy, not because you’re looking for reference photos. Read More>>

For me it can be difficult to avoid burnout, being a small business owner my work never really shuts off. I often get phone calls/texts/emails at all hours of the day and it can be challenging for me to put work aside. That being said it’s very important for me to try to avoid getting burnt out with my work. The biggest help for me has been to delegate and ask for support whenever possible. Im very fortunate to have family that can help me at work and take on some tasks when I feel overwhelmed. I also do my best to make time for activities that bring me joy and fulfillment outside of work. Read More>>
