Benjamin Gilmour of Downtown on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Benjamin Gilmour. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Benjamin, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I’m really big on starting my day off right, so I’ll go for a 20 minute walk almost as soon as I wake up to get fresh air and get my blood flowing. During this I’ll usually pray and go over the “to-dos” for the day. Then I’ll make a quick breakfast and coffee, read, journal, and head off to the gym. I like to be up around 6 so I can do all this and still make it to my office by 9!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey guys, my name is Benjamin Gilmour, and for the longest time I worked as a freelancer in the film industry; doing everything from gaffing, camera oping, directing, acting, and even producing. Over the past year I’ve worked on the production side of things as a UPM and Associate Producer for a few films with some Big names attached (like Tyrese Gibson, Terrance Howard, and Michael Jai white). The experience from the past few years has lead me to launch my new production company, FilmPoint Ky! It’s a full production service House for commercials and film. From complete project management to sourcing crew and vendors, we’ve got you covered! I actually am in the middle of my first commercial under the company as I write this! With Louisville continuing to put itself on the map for films, I feel like it’s the perfect time for people to get into the industry.
The goal for FilmPoint KY is to bring more productions through the state I call home and thus give more jobs to the local crew. I love being on set and putting a team together, so it felt right to start this now.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
For the longest time I believed I had to go it alone; that asking for help or even seeking it made me appear weak or stupid. I’m so glad I learned that there is nothing quite like having a great team behind you. I’ve failed so many times, but having a friend help you get back up and push you towards your goals is one of the best feelings. And it does not make you weak! It only makes you stronger to admit you don’t know and to ask for help

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yeah and I’ll never forget it. It was a time where I should’ve been ecstatic about life, but I kept waking up feeling numb and empty.
It was a Christmas Eve, and I missed going to church with my family to go attempt to end my life. I wasn’t happy, but more than that I felt like a failure that what I was chasing didn’t make me feel like I thought it would. Obviously I wasn’t successful, but I decided in that moment that I was going to have to make a drastic change and start asking for help.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
That investing in people more than business is a great time investment. Now what do I mean by that?
When people say, “put your head down, miss out on events, distance yourself from those that slow you down, and then you’ll succeed,” they are missing the fact that it’s the relationships around us that truly make us feel successful. Taking time to go help a friend in need, or simply grabbing coffee with a sibling, or checking in on someone you haven’t heard from in a while can all have compounding impacts on our lives. Don’t push people away chasing money or success. It’s a lonely destination. Rather, invest in those around you and champion them forward too

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yes. Many times. It’s a trap we fall into. “If I only get this, I’ll be happy.” But every time it comes up empty. If you don’t know your purpose, then it won’t matter how many times you get what you want. You’ll never feel fulfilled.
