Beth Knaus of Norwood, MA on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Beth Knaus and have shared our conversation below.

Beth, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
They don’t know themselves well. Many women spend their time serving others, and see themselves in the roles they play for other people – coworkers, bosses, friends, partners, parents, children, etc. Rather than listening to their gut and following their intuition, they are listening to external opinions. Also, solopreneurs work alone most of the time, so if they need advice or references, the easiest and most available information they have is what other people are doing and saying.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Beth Knaus, an award-winning copywriter, messaging consultant, and CEO of That’s A Spade Copywriting Services.

I write content for female entrepreneurs who know they are good at what they do, but need help communicating what’s unique about them to their target audience, so they can attract and work with the clients they can serve best.

These women have been in business for a bit, long enough to know who their ideal client is not. They are tired of using generic, overused language but need help infusing their individuality and perspective into their content.

Here are some of the services I offer to help separate my clients from their peers in the marketplace:

Done-for-you writing services – website copy, blogs, case studies, and other conversational content
Consulting sessions for personal, unbiased, and expert support
Messaging services to say things the way your clients need to hear them

I’m also an author, a speaker, and a workshop facilitator, available for custom workshops and speaking engagements focused on communication and creativity.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Human bonds can be broken by judgment, lying, breaking trust, or just plain heading in different directions. But any of the reasons are driven by a lack of honest and open communication. We want to avoid awkward discussions, other people’s emotions, and confrontation. So sometimes we build a wedge instead of showing the other person respect by talking it out.
If a broken bond can be restored, it requires first that open and honest communication I mentioned. You need patience – the other person may not be willing to heal or forgive at your pace. If you really value the bond, you’ll commit to restoring the relationship regardless of how long it takes.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Growing up as an only child in a double alcoholic household. Thanks to my father’s recovery, I attended my first AA meeting at 11 years old and learned how to navigate life’s challenges and choices. Although I’ve never struggled with addiction, those principles are the foundation of how I live.

Going through a divorce which sucks for everyone involved. There are no winners, and it rocks your self-esteem. Lots of self-care, reflection, observation, and time with myself helped me through it.

Losing my dad – the man who raised me, the one human I could rely on without a doubt for 43 years. Although I knew it was coming, I was devastated. I lean on everything he taught me about life and try to live by his philosophy. I try my best to share with those I love the knowledge and love he shared with me.

Having breast cancer after living 56 healthy years. The vulnerability, uncertainty, and fear of deteriorating health weighed on me, and still can three years later. Seeking and finding support from caregivers, friends, and family, along with rebuilding physical and mental resilience, have helped me move forward.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I think of myself as someone who knows what’s going on, but I tend to hang out at the edge of the circle to observe how things go. I may try something initially because of gut instinct, but not because everyone else is rushing towards it with serious FOMO. What’s an example? Social media trends, like posting every day on every platform and making reels, stories, etc. I’m one human. Before I commit, I want to see it work for a number of people, then decide if it’s right for me. If it is, I make more of a foundational shift. The same thing goes for natural health and healing fads. There are so many choices. You may not need them all. You may not need any. What I do believe in is moderation, on all levels. What can I say? I’m a Libra who strives for balance.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I understand that facts and feelings both need to be addressed. It’s okay to have emotions about things, but you still have to take action to handle the challenge. I also know I’m only responsible for my choices, actions, and reactions, and cannot control the choices, actions, and/or reactions of others. It’s ok to feel bad about someone else’s actions and reactions, but it shouldn’t stop you from doing what’s best for you.
