We recently had the chance to connect with Beth Picard and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Beth, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: When was the last time you felt true joy?
Every day now- we moved to a small island off the coast of South Carolina and live on the beach- I walk on the beach everyday and between the magnificent sunrises and finding treasures on the beach that I make into things, I experience joy and awe each day
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have been an artist since I was six and started taking private art lessons. I’m 68 now and have never stopped painting or finding ways to be creative
In the past I have mostly painted with acrylic on canvas, and enjoyed the success of that. Since moving to an island with no bridge, getting large canvases can be a challenge so I’ve been doing more watercolors and other things with an island vibe
I make small flower sculptures out of shells I find on the beach, I’ve made some watercolor earrings, and painted all the places in the island and had them made into leggings and men’s shirts. All of which are being sold at a local gift shop
Being in the most wonderful place I’ve ever lived and on the ocean feeds my creativity like never before
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My father started teaching me how to draw before I started taking art lessons. He is a very talented artist, although not something he ever pursued. Both he and my mother encouraged my love of playing with art and I have never thought of myself as anything else but an artist
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I’ve never been one to give up or quit. I guess I really like a challenge, so I guess when things have gotten tough, I saw it as a challenge and found ways to push through.
Because I am ADHD, I find I need to do a variety of different things and so maybe when I’ve been bored with one medium or start to find it tedious, I just switch gears and find something new to do.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Everyone that knows me would say “what you see is what you get” My face cannot lie- thankfully I’m a happy person, so hopefully there aren’t too many facial giveaways if I’m not in a particularly good mood. I’m well known for the “eyeroll”, which I absolutely cannot control!
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will say that I loved my life, enjoyed being around people and making them laugh and of course, being creative. Whether it is painting, decorating my house for Christmas (which is terribly overdone- but so much fun), decorating my house in my own quirky way, and finding new things to make all the time.
That I never let anything get in my way when I set my mind to something.
Mostly I would love for people to say that I was fun to be with.
