Boosting Productivity Through Self-Care

When you have a never-ending to-do list it can feel irresponsible to engage in self-care, but in our many conversations with some of the most productive business owners and creatives we’ve found that self-care is one of the most effective ways to boost productivity.

A new big change I’ve made in order to keep me from burnout is a strict “no work” rule on the weekends. I plan my weekends to spend time with my family and friends and don’t want to stress myself out with thinking about all I have to do, so I really let myself take a break. It makes it so once Monday rolls around I am excited, rejuvenated, and ready to jump in head first to everything I have to get done. Read more>>

How’s Your Self-Care Game? Let’s Talk About Why It Matters!
Self-care might seem like the latest buzzword, but for me, it’s been my secret sauce for decades. My journey started back in 1999 when life threw me a curveball. I was a newly minted Radio & TV Broadcast Journalist in the Air Force, juggling the pressures of learning a new job while leading a small team. Stress was piling up faster than I could handle. A trip to the doctor led to an ADHD diagnosis and some medication, which helped, but I quickly realized that pills weren’t the whole answer. Read more>>

Sometimes when life starts to get sloppy, when time seems to grow short and the To-Do list seems to grow long I like to try and take a back seat on life and give myself some space. I set aside a little time everyday to just do nothing and I think it helps to clear my mental palette and help me reset.

A stranger working at a grocery store checkout once said to me: “Its good to be bored sometimes.”

I think about that often. Read more>>

Saying no. When I first started this journey of baking/cake decorating I thought I had to take every order. I listened to people who told me, “you have to get your name out there, so saying yes, is going to be important”.

Saying no, even when I am not busy allows me to recalibrate. It affords me some time to reconnect with people who matter to me and even just to decompress and enjoy my own company, so that when I take on more orders I am not coming from a place of depletion. The alone time allows me some time to clear my head, get my energy back, allowing creativity to flow and get excited about baking. Read more>>

For me, self-care isn’t just another item on my to-do list – it’s the foundation that allows everything else to flow naturally. I’ve learned that creating intentional pauses throughout my day, especially through what I call “micro-retreats,” has completely transformed how I show up in the world.  Read more>>

As a mom and a business owner, self-care hasn’t always come easy for me. In fact, there was a time when I almost completely neglected it. There’s this guilt—this nagging voice that says you should always be doing something productive, whether it’s for your kids or your business. For moms especially, self-care can feel like a luxury we’re not “allowed” to have. Add to that the societal pressure to be everything to everyone, and it’s easy to see why so many of us put ourselves last. Read more>>

Being an effective trauma therapist, mother, partner, and business owner means prioritizing daily and weekly practices that support my mental and physical health, and putting non-negotiable creative play, social connections, and rest in my calendar. For me, this looks like taking hikes with my husband, son, and friends several days each week, using breath work and meditation to center between clients, taking dance classes, and cooking at the end of a busy day, and writing in my journal when I’m feeling overwhelmed. The past few years have been quite challenging. I have struggled with getting my thoughts out and being motivated to do hard things. This year I have been focusing on my self care. I have been painting and creating for myself and my joy first. I have also let go of anyone elses view of Me. My view of myself is the most important aspect of my positive mental state. It was so hard to begin that process and focus on my self care. I also began to see an Amazing accupuncture doctor named Dr. Flora and she has helped Me to retrain my mind and body to be more mindful of how I approach each day. I have slowed down and I have started to enjoy the small moments and not focus on any deficits I have but focus on the positive and doing this has caused Me to be more effective and joyful in all areas of my life.
