Brittany samsil shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Brittany, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I’ve been called to work with intention while staying true to myself. As a full-time artist I got temporarily trapped into painting what people wanted rather than painting what I wanted. I thought, the bills are due so I should paint what will sell. I have realized that when I paint what I really want then I give more detail and dedicate more time to the work. This has benefited my business and my inner self.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Brittany Samsil. I own the business Brittany Samsil. I’m a full-time artist and designer who believes that art should go on and beyond the frame.
I create original canvas paintings, hand-painted hats, and mixed media pieces using acrylic paint, charcoal pencil, and epoxy. Every piece is deeply inspired by emotion and the world around me, my surroundings, experiences and energy. Every hat, every painting, every detail is made by hand, with intention.
My style is bold, textured, and unapologetically unique. Some pieces are raw and emotional, others bright and full of movement—but all of them are meant to be felt. Whether you’re wearing one of my hats or hanging a canvas in your space, you’re carrying a story. A connection.
Art, to me is personal. It’s power. And I’m is here to turn everyday life into something expressive and unforgettable.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My father, he has always been his consistent self throughout my life. He has also always loved me unconditionally. The rest of my environment always seemed to love me for what I could do for them, like love was given if I was good and was very transactional. My father’s thoughts of me have always been the same. He would allow me to be who I was through any stage and love me the same through every process.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
This is a uncomfortable question so I’ll try to answer the best I can.
My most defined wound in life is my relationship with my mother. Growing up I always felt like a burden. One day she would be so loving and the next it was as if I had set the world on fire. I grew up thinking something was wrong with me. Like I wasn’t good enough and that love was pretending not to love. When I was young I could spill something on the floor by accident and she would go days without talking to me. Stonewalling is what it’s called but I wasn’t aware of that then. I felt as if i had done something horrible. There was also some underlying competition through my teenage to adult years that I didn’t realize until pointed out by a therapist in my 30s. Im 35 now and still healing. At first I cut contact after a argument on Mother’s day. I had to step away to look at the bigger picture. I guess what it comes down to is accepting things have happened. I think she gave the best she could with what she had and that this behavior was generational. I’ve always raised my children the opposite of how she raised me because I don’t want my children to have a childhood that they have to recover from. That has been the main drive for me to heal, my children.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Many artists refer to themselves as starving artists. You only starve if you don’t apply yourself. What good is art if no one sees it? Get it out there, learn about running a business, marketing, different platforms and book keeping for starters.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I’m excited often and I love what I do. I am most excited when I see how satisfied customers are with my work, no one has ever been disappointed but when I see them smile its brings the most satisfaction. I also love work, so most days when im painting im happy and appreciate the fact that I get to do what I love for a living.
