Butterr Improv of Downtown Baton Rouge, LA on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Butterr Improv and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Butterr, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Improv, obviously! Everyone in Butterr has such different lives and careers, so it’s always refreshing to leave a long day behind, get together, and just let go. We don’t have to think about what to say, we just get to play.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Butterr is an improv troupe based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We like to think of ourselves as a bit of a dysfunctional family, which fits perfectly with our format the “Living Room.” It’s where we sit down, have real conversations on stage, and then create improv scenes inspired by whatever comes up.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a kid, we believed we always had to think before we spoke because that’s what adults drilled into us, right? But improv completely ruined that rule for us. Now we’ve learned that blurting out the first ridiculous thing that pops into our head can actually be comedy gold. Turns out, not thinking before you speak isn’t a flaw… it’s a skill set.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
Every single Monday night at practice. When we show up together, we know every single one of us is going to listen and “yes, and” whatever comes our way. It’s the first thing you learn on Day 1 of Improv 101, and it’s where the trust really starts to build. Every practice and every show, we’re locked in, hanging on to whatever anyone says.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
Like we mentioned earlier, we rely on each other’s ideas within the team, and we’re ready to roll with whatever someone throws out there. We’re digging? Perfect. Hand me a shovel. We’re dogs now? Great. Woof woof.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When Butterr is gone, we hope people remember how much we loved our community and how much joy we found in bringing people together. We’ve always been a team built on family.
