We’re excited to chat with Caeland Mosley about 48 Laws of Power. Check out our conversation below.
Caeland, thanks for joining us again, we really appreciate you sharing your thoughts and insights about 48 Laws of Power. Let’s start with a quick summary to bring everyone up to speed.
The 48 Laws of Power gives knowledge and history to explain the Laws in full detail. Robert Greene breaks down each law by giving us a summary on the contents page of the 48 laws of power. Each law has what’s called “transgression of the law”, which gives a historical background for the reader to grasp. Each Law has an “Interpretation” which simplifies the Transgression of the law. Afterward, he speaks about what is called the “Observance of the Law”. In the Observance of the law we read and understand and observe how the law is used. Then is followed up by the interpretation to summarize the “observance of the law”.
Once you read the Interpretation, Robert then discusses the “keys to power”. In this section of the Law he breaks down the law so that it can be used by anyone and gives us some insight into how other people perceive us and our gifts so we can navigate life effectively and apply each law to our lives. Then we have what is called the “Reversal of the Law”. The reversal of the law is how the law works in reverse. Robert gives us an “image” in each law which is painting an image in our minds to go with the law. Robert then gives the reader what’s called the “authority”. Authority is a solid piece of advice that is congruent with the law. Overall, The 48 Laws of Power is a book that should be treated as a reference. It is not a book that should be read front to back but rather this book should be used a study guide and should be applied to ones life.
Awesome, so let’s dive a bit more into why this book matters to you.
Reading the 48 Laws of Power has given me the knowledge and insight into how each law works. It taught me how to deal with people effectively. For example, Law 44: Disarm and infuriate with Mirror Affect. This is simply stating if someone is acting out of line, a good way to show them how they are acting is to mirror their actions. Therefore, they see you as a mirror and they correct their behavior. Dealing with certain people can be frustrating, I have been through many trials dealing with people. Understanding the Laws of Power gave me the leverage and the upper hand I needed in certain situations. I’ve had many encounters with tyrannical mangers and managers that just don’t take their jobs seriously. This is congruent with the first law which states to never outshine the master. Unless they are weak, then there is no need to outshine him/her just let gravity take them down, you will not have to touch them.
When I read The 48 Laws of Power, I learned something new and it is about someone who is legendary for example I thought of Thomas Eddison as an inventor and a scientific mind. Upon reading, I learned that he wasn’t scientific at all he was an opportunistic businessman who took credit from other inventors like Nikola Tesla. This is mentioned in Law seven get other people to do the work then take the credit. I understand this law will give me a god-like image while I am just a mortal. This book is applicable to life and makes life easier to navigate for me.
What would you say were some of the most eye-opening or thought-provoking topics in the book?
Law 19 states to know who you are dealing with, do not offend the wrong person. No one person is the same, in the world as we interact with each other sometimes we will come across people who are jealous of who we are. Sometimes people steal or they cause harm. Law 19 states that you should always be careful of who you offend. Some people are forgiving and they let things go but other people are not so forgiving. If you cross the wrong person some will harbor revenge and they will track you down. In the Observance of the Law, it talks about a gentleman named J Frank Norfleet who was a cattleman who owned a ranch in Denver Colorado tracked down all the con artist who formed one of the best con-artist rings in Denver. Fury one of con men convinced Norfleet of riches and emptied his bank of 45,000 dollars. He set out on a mission to track down all of the con artist. One con-artist was tracked and found in San Francisco instead of turning himself in he committed suicide. Sizing up your opponent sound’s like common sense as we know common sense is not common. Norfleet managed to put all but one of the con-men behind bars. He lost his ranch and his marriage but he died a happy and satisfied man.
A lesson we can take from this story is people are not the same and everyone reacts to situations differently. As you cross a street, you should always look both ways. It’s the same concept when you are dealing with people look both ways when you are talking with someone. There were times when I would go to the grocery store, while talking to the cashier he/she would try to belittle me out of envy by saying something artfully creative with their words. In my experience of employment I have worked with individuals who were jealous of me for reasons unknown. If someone is jealous of you they will try to smudge something about you, it could be your name or your reputation. One way to counteract their behavior is to call them out. Calling someone out on their behavior is like shining a light in the dark and startles them. This will disorientate them and force them to change their ways. In conclusion, only a fool thinks it’s ok to step on someone’s foot but cannot take the pain if they get stepped on in return.
How did you discover this book?
As someone who loves to read books, I spend a lot of my time browsing through books on Amazon. One day, while browsing on Amazon. I discovered The 48 Laws of Power written by Robert Greene, I read the description of the book, and decided to purchase it. Upon receiving the book, I instantly sat to read. I really enjoyed what Robert Greene had to say about Law 27: Play on People’s Need to Believe to Create a Cult Like Following, and Law 25: Recreate Yourself. I found both of these to be true to life. I have been many versions of myself in my lifetime. I have also learned how to have a more intellectual way of using words. When creating a cult-like following you have to be able to sell your ideas in a way that sounds like your ideas are the answer to their prayers, or you yourself are the answer to all their problems. Communication is very powerful, While I worked in sales that is when I understood the power of communication. When you are able to master these soft skills, Learn your audience and your product, then you will be able to sell anything. Through reading some of The 48 Laws, I came to relate to them, learning the concept while I was in sales. Some are common sense, For example, Law 10 states to avoid The Unhappy and Unlucky.
