Caleb Davis of Texas / Oklahoma statewide on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Caleb Davis. Check out our conversation below.

Caleb, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
I started with Soundly Speaking with little awareness about the adults with IDD population. I have learned so much since I started, but the most interesting thing to me has been their motivations. So many people discount our clients and what they are capable of. They think that somehow these disabilities have taken away any motivation and capability to accomplish goals and this is simply not true. Through talking with our clients, I have seen their motivations and goals and they have much the same goals I have. Ask any of our clients what’s important to them and they will say much of the same things you and I would say: family, friends, their favorite sports teams, and their favorite hobbies.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Caleb Davis with Soundly Speaking Therapy Services. I have been working with the company since 2016 and currently work as our Chief Growth Officer. My job as the CGO oversees all of our hiring and marketing projects including outreach to families both current and future as well as working with over 140 agencies currently contracted with us. Soundly Speaking as a whole works exclusively with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) across Texas and Oklahoma. We provide a variety of therapy services including speech, physical, and occupational therapies alongside dietary services and communication based behavior management to help our clients achieve whatever their goals are in life. We are currently working on adding new services including music therapy!

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
The world has tried and failed to tell me who I should be. Early on I had a knack for the different starting with my first business venture when I was 5 years old selling drinks and candy to neighborhood kids after school. Since then time and time again I have had people telling me to “slow down” and to “follow my peers” when I wanted to surge ahead and succeed. It happened when I was a Boy Scout working towards being one of the youngest Eagle Scouts ever, and multiple times while I was in school and in extracurriculars. Thankfully I never let this phase me and I strive to instill the same bullheadedness in our clients. They too are told what to do, who to talk to, where to go, and how to behave. It is our stance that the world doesn’t know you or me, and they judge all to quickly the ability of a fish to climb a tree.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
As I was finishing my undergrad, I had aspirations to go to law school. After preparing and studying for many hours and not getting into my desired school, I really took a good look at my plans and realized that would not have been the best experience for me. Something I realized is that closed doors are sometimes a gift. This time I believe God shielded me from an experience that would have only push me farther from what I am called to do.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends have said that my family, close friends, and my relationship with Jesus are the most important things in my life. They are the people that I pour my life into and the people I come back to time and time again when I need help. I eventually would like to start my own family and pour my time into them.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
This brings to mind the idea of integrity, doing what you believe is right even when others are not around, especially when no one will ever find out. I do like occasional praise, but I am much more interested in the impact I can have on other people’s lives. That kind of motivation ensures I can give everything my best even if I am never praised for it, and it prepares me for the times when I work in quiet for extended periods of time before I see any kind of feedback.
