Cameron Tilbury on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Cameron Tilbury shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Cameron, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What battle are you avoiding?
ADHD, autism, anxiety, and depression. I’m quite happy to talk about my mental health issues because they’ve given me the ability to be a strong creative…not without the cost though.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m originally from the Toronto area, in Canada. At age 40, I moved to England and worked at ad agencies in Maidstone, Nottingham, Peterborough, and London. At age 50, I moved to Nashville…my age seemed to be an issue when applying for advertising agency jobs, so I started my own digital ad agency. That failed. I then started an internationally syndicated, weekly radio show, which became, eventually, a three-times weekly web tv show. At age 63, I moved back to Canada. I now reside in Victoria, British Columbia. I’m an internationally experienced, award winning, freelance copywriter/creative director.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
No particular “moment,” really. Moving out of the familiar comfort zone, and moving to different places in the world though..that changes one’s view of the world.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. Every single day. It’s been that way since I was a child. However, the sun comes up the next day and I try again. And again.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely not. Having worked in radio, tv, acting, modelling, etc., people assume that I’m quite gregarious and outgoing. I’m absolutely the opposite of that. I survive because I’ve spent my life masking my adhd and autism.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
Nothing. I regret nothing. I’ve screwed up a lot, and bad things have happened to me, but I wouldn’t change a thing. All of it has made me who I am.
