Cameryn Hodges on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Cameryn Hodges shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Cameryn, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I am the most proud of continuing to build the social media presence as well at the professional creative portfolio that I have. I have been on YouTube for now almost over 9 years creating long-form video content all about my life! I am the most proud that even over the years through trial and error, I have always been consistent with it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have a YouTube channel, “Cameryn Grace,” with a following of over 3,350 subscribers, where I post twice a week, as well as a blog, “Cameryn Writes,” where I post-college and lifestyle-related content where I post weekly. My blog is a WordPress blog. Also, I run a weekly podcast entitled “Current Talk” with one of my college best friends Faithe Metellus that current holds 2,300 downloads from 27+ countries where we post weekly. I have been podcasting for now almost 4 years. We have interviewed over 50 guests. We discuss lifestyle topics, advice and current events. Currently, I have been VERY active on my TikTok account @cameryn.hodges posting almost everyday snippets of the my adventures traveling the world. Also in my free time, I like to draw various digital illustrations @cameryn.art and as well as starting my own creative media outlet @cameryngracemedia on bth Instagram and TikTok.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I would have to say my creative & girl boss self-starter part of me. I am the most proud being featured in a published book called “The Creator Revolution: How Today’s Creative Talents Are Shaping Our Tomorrow” In the summer 2021, I had the amazing opportunity to connect with the phenomenal Catherine Yeo during both of our Disney Professional Internships. In August 2021, I had a chance to interview with Catherine to share my story as a content creator on YouTube so far since I started during my sophomore year of high school back in 2016 (almost 6 years ago!) located on pg. 160 in the novel. And now a full year later, “The Creator Revolution: How Today’s Creative Talents Are Shaping Our Tomorrow” is now out for the world to read. I myself as well as 50 other creators’ stories are featured throughout the novel such as Issa Rae, Claudine James & Ryan Kaji, and many more. Since the book’s officially release, it has hit #1 Bestseller and #1 New Release on Amazon in multiple categories within its first month! 📖 About the Book: The Creator Revolution: How Today’s Creative Talents Are Shaping Our Tomorrow is a deep dive into the rise of content creators in our digital world and their impact on our future. It stems from my own story as a creator and shares the stories & insights of so many incredible creators, investors, founders, and more.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would say “do it for you and keep going” !!! My Content Creation journey began in December 2016, when I was a sophomore in high school. I was a huge fan of my favorite creators that vlogged in and recorded their day-to-day lives. As I entered high school, I thought it would be fun to document my high school journey on YouTube to look back on in the future. However, it was not at all easy for me. I have experience being heavily bullied for my videos and my channel. I experienced a lot of in-person and online hate and parasocial relationships with people who I had thought were my friends. I would come home in tears some days just because the hate would be getting that bad. But I still kept pushing and created creative content for not only myself but to prepare me for my future career in the digital world. When I started my channel, I just simply used my iPhone to film, but over time, I invested a couple high-quality cameras to upgrade my video quality. Ever since then, I have been consistently creating content on YouTube for now almost 6 full years! Currently, I am happy to saw that I have now reached a point with my self-confidence in content creation that allows me to not care what other people think and just create for myself and my future.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes! 1000%! I solely and mostly film and create lifestyle surrounding my routine in multiple areas. AUTHENTICITY is very key for me! I am very big on just being yourself, and the right people will come to you. I have encountered and experienced a lot of fake friends throughout my content creation journey would have tried to impersonate me or use me for my social media. At the end of the day, I constantly remind myself to not let it get to me and keep on pressing because there will always be people who are talking about you and choose to hate you.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope the story people tell about me is that I lived to create! I have and will always have a STRONG passion for storytelling through art. I am constantly using my skills to not only create for myself but also for others to help them on their creative journey. I am constantly being inspired by my personal favorite creators to continue to push the limits.
