Cara D’Orazio of Huntington on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Cara D’Orazio and have shared our conversation below.

Cara, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Working at the local cat shelter ! I get to socialize with the cats and step out of the fitness realm for a bit. They are such wonderful calming creatures!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the owner of C.G.M. Fitness Inc., and I have been teaching and training for over 20 years. My experience spans across one-on-one personal training, both in person and online, as well as leading group fitness classes virtually. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a wide range of clients, helping them find formats and routines that fit their unique needs and lifestyles.

I teach a variety of formats including barre, TRX, strength, resistance band training, Pilates, and more. In addition, I created my own trademarked program called L.E.T.S. Werq!, which stands for Lengthen, Elongate, Tone, Stretch. This program combined Barre and Pilates elements with low-impact cardio.

To bring my vision to life, I converted my two-car garage into a fully functional fitness studio. This space allows me to offer private training sessions as well as virtual classes in a professional yet welcoming environment. For those who prefer in-person instruction, clients are able to come directly to my studio. I also extend my teaching to Life Time Gyms, where I lead a few classes each week.

What truly sets me apart is my ability to adapt to each individual. I believe that fitness is not one-size-fits-all. While strength training may be the best fit for one client, another may thrive through Pilates or barre. Because I am well-versed in multiple formats, I guide women in discovering the workouts they genuinely enjoy—helping them not only reach their goals but also stay consistent and motivated long-term.

My website is www.cgmfit.com. Feel free to try a virtual fitness class live or a recording using code WELCOMECGM at checkout !

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
The best lessons I’ve learned about work came from immersing myself in the gym environment. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in small gyms, large gyms, and even big fitness chains, each offering a unique perspective. The most valuable experience, however, came from directly interacting with clients—both one-on-one and in group classes—which truly prepared me for the career I’ve built today. Beyond training, I also gained insight into the operational side of fitness facilities by observing how things were managed behind the front desk. Those experiences not only strengthened my skills as a trainer but also gave me the foundation I needed to create my own studio, establish an efficient workflow, and successfully run my own business.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be this: you will be okay. Life has a way of working out exactly as it’s meant to, even if it doesn’t always feel that way in the moment. I would remind myself not to carry so much worry, because the challenges that once felt overwhelming would eventually lead to growth, strength, and opportunities I couldn’t yet see.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the fitness industry is the idea that you have to work out for a certain number of hours or minutes each day to see results. The truth is, even small amounts of movement can make a substantial difference in our lives. Not everyone has the time, energy, or capacity to commit to a full hour-long workout every day—and that’s okay. Even just 15 minutes of consistent movement can have a powerful impact, and it’s always far better than doing nothing at all.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I were to retire tomorrow, I think my clients would miss my consistency and organizational skills the most. I rarely ever cancel personal training sessions—in fact, this entire year I’ve only taken one or two vacations—because I value keeping my clients in their routines and holding them accountable. I take the time to plan out their programs in advance, ensuring that each session is purposeful and structured. I believe this level of preparation and commitment sets me apart, as many trainers tend to “wing it,” whereas I focus on creating long-term progress and stability for the people I work with.
