Carlene Levy’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We recently had the chance to connect with Carlene Levy and have shared our conversation below.

Carlene , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, what brings me joy outside of work is spending quality time with family and friends. Whether it’s traveling to see my family, sharing laughter while having Sunday dinner, or catching up on life with my friends. These moments fill me with a sense of joy and gratitude. I’ve also found real fulfillment in surrounding myself with individuals who uplift, inspire, and encourage a growth mindset. Being in that kind of energy has helped me stay grounded and focused on the things that truly matter.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! My name is Carlene Levy. I was born in Jamaica, grew up in New York, and currently live in Maryland. My passion for natural hair has been a transformative journey. As a child, I endured the heat of hot combs at the salon and later relied on relaxers. In my late 20s, I faced challenges like damage, dryness, brittleness, and breakage. My skin, too, felt the effects of changing weather and daily elements. To turn these struggles into strength, Liz Luxuriant’s line of products was created, which celebrates thick, healthy hair and nourished skin, all inspired by my Jamaican roots. Each product is a commitment to supporting healthy hair growth and radiant skin. Thoughtfully crafted with essential oils and extracts, they nourish, restore, and revitalize. Liz Luxuriant is devoted to boosting self-confidence and promoting self-care in our daily and weekly routines. Our gentle, effective formulas cater to all hair textures and skin types, embracing the beauty of diversity while remaining free from toxic chemicals.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
My mother passed away when I was very young. As a child, I believed that growing up without her meant I could never feel whole. I felt sad and lost without her love and guidance. I truly thought her absence defined my ability to become anything meaningful.
However, through personal-growth development, I’ve realized that while her absence brought pain and complicated emotions, it no longer controls my story. I’ve found strength in my struggles, resilience in my healing, and purpose in my growth. When you trust your journey, you learn, grow, and evolve. I’ve discovered that I am enough and proud to be a phenomenal woman on a mission to help others achieve greatness!

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
Growing up, I was a private person, often keeping my feelings and thoughts to myself. In my 30s, I embraced my pain and transformed it into power the moment I chose vulnerability. By openly sharing my struggles, I found that I was no longer threatened; instead, it became the driving force behind my growth. My truth became my strength, and my healing transformed into my true power.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A cultural value I hold in high regard and protect at all costs is respect for others and myself. This value is deeply rooted in both my Christian faith and my Jamaican heritage. As a Christian, I believe in living with integrity and kindness, guided by the teachings of love, forgiveness, and grace. My Jamaican roots emphasize strong family unity and discipline. These two have shaped my morals in how I carry myself with faith, pride, and unwavering respect for myself.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
At first, I believed I needed validation from others to feel accomplished. I looked for praise every time I completed something, hoping it would affirm my worth. But over time, I’ve learned to turn inward. Now, I give myself the recognition I deserve. I’ve evolved to understand my value and celebrate my wins, both big and small. My worth is not defined by applause, but by the intention and heart I put into everything I do.
