We’re looking forward to introducing you to Cat Thompson. Check out our conversation below.
Cat, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Music! Music makes me lose track of time.
As a music producer and songwriter, when I’m working on a song in the recording studio, I completely lose track of time. Music is euphoric, spellbinding and when you’re creating you’re in your own world!
It’s only when I emerge from the studio that I realise what time of day it is or how many hours have passed haha!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Cat Thompson. I am a Pop-R&B recording artist, songwriter and music producer.
I have just dropped my brand new single, Dance Fire, which is an upbeat, dance anthem that celebrates passion for movement, rhythm and love on the dance floor. Dance Fire is also a celebration of feminine confidence. Feeling bold enough to say, “If you want me, step up and show me!”
I worked with an amazing producer named Jhay C who also shares a love for Hip Hop dance. When we got into the studio we had an absolute blast working on this track – so much so that we ended up dancing in the studio while we were recording the song. My choreographer and music video director, James Deane, was also in the studio with us so the session was a really good vibe!
After we finished recording the track, I worked with James Deane on the music video concept. I really wanted to capture the songs themes: dance, passion, love and flirtations on the dance floor. James Deane created the choreography, planned the shoot to match my vision and brought in a really talented DP and videograher, Chris Harrison, to help with building the music video sets. They did an amazing job and helped me bring Dance Fire to life!
I’m excited to say that you can now watch the music video for Dance Fire on YouTube and the song is available on music streaming platforms!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My mother.
She was a hairdresser and beautician. She did weddings and would take on the responsibility of doing the hair of an entire bridal party.
As a kid, she’d wake me up at 4:00AM on weekends to help her work. We’d load the car and go to the client’s house. My job was to assist her while she styled the hair of everyone in the bridal party plus any family members or friends of the bride who booked to have their hair done for the event. We had to work quickly, especially if it was a morning or midday wedding.
Each day, when I came home from school, I would sweep hair off the floor of my mother’s salon, make coffee or tea for the customers, clean brushes and towels and babysit the customer’s children while she permed, cut, and styled hair. She was often working late so I also cooked dinner and kept the house.
Like most kids, I wanted to go out and play but the experience taught me to work hard.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Everything is going to be okay.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Integrity, respect and kindness.
I believe that we should treat each other with integrity, respect and kindness.
In today’s fast moving world, it’s easy to forget that we are all humans sharing one planet.
We’re all doing our best to get through the day. We each have battles to face – emotional, financial, health or other.
If we could just remember to treat each other with integrity, respect and kindness it would make all the difference.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Yes! I just did a live music tour in Vietnam with former Red Bull official DJ, Jamie Vale. That definitely made me want to tap dance haha!
It was amazing to perform on stages with Jamie Vale and a huge privilege doing live shows in another country!
I am so thankful to have had the chance to travel while sharing my love for music.
I especially loved a place in Vietnam called Mũi Né – a beautiful beachside town with live music, warm nights and friendly locals. For anyone who likes kitesurfing, it’s the place to go.
I personally don’t have the balance or skill to kitesurf but one evening, we were performing live at Laho rooftop bar at MANA Beach Resort Muine which was overlooking the ocean. The sun was setting and we could see kitesurfers gliding along the beach. It was an amazing sight!
Another memorable gig was at Cargo Remote Mui Ne. There were fireworks and people dancing! I loved every minute of it!
Now that my new single Dance Fire is out I’m tap dancing again!
Just this week, the song has played on radio stations in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK. I’m honestly so grateful for the support and so happy that people are enjoying my new single!
