Chaimae Bouzagaoui on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Chaimae Bouzagaoui and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Chaimae, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Definitely reading. It makes me lose track of time. It’s as if I get transported to another dimension whenever I’m reading. I love books so much. They have always made me feel so understood. As in introvert, I don’t talk about personal feelings much, but reading books is a very healing experience in the sense that a writer is able to put one’s exact feelings into words. Even when one struggles to understand their own feelings to begin with.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Chaimae, and I’m 26 years old. I was born and raised in the Netherlands to Moroccan immigrant parents. I published my debut poetry collection, Cherry Blossom Season, back in March 2021, and I launched my business, Memoirs of a Moroccan, back in April 2023. Through Memoirs of a Moroccan I offer copywriting services, creative writing workshops, and much more. Previous collaborations of mine were with human rights organization Amnesty International and Amsterdam news channel AT5.
I also have a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, and I’m currently doing a Master’s degree in Biology; Molecular Biology track. Having this mix of art and science in my life really makes me thrive. Being in balance is key to maintaining health and peace, in my opinion.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Actually, for me it was the other way around. From very early on the world tried to tell me who I should or shouldn’t be, what I should or shouldn’t do, that I couldn’t do this or couldn’t do that… But even as a kid I was very sure of my goals and dreams, and I never listened to other people’s negative opinions. I was always labeled as ‘stubborn’, ‘difficult’, ‘rebellious’… And I’m proud of that. These traits have saved me and have stayed with me even during adulthood.

I realize that those people have a limited mindset and trap themselves in a box that way. I realize that their definition of ‘impossible’ isn’t the same as my definition of it. I personally believe that I can do anything I set my mind to and that I was meant for great things in life. Every time I achieve something, I don’t only prove myself right, I also automatically prove those people wrong.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
Who says I stopped hiding my pain? I never did. I’ve actually openly written about it in my book, Cherry Blossom Season, and that’s exactly why I was able to turn my pain into power. You don’t conquer pain by hiding it; you conquer it by taking away its significance. In my case I did that through writing poetry.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Definitely. There’s no image to maintain when you’re authentic by nature. I absolutely despise dishonesty, so for me it doesn’t make any sense to maintain different versions of me. I would feel like a hypocrite. There’s only one Chaimae, love her or hate her, either way she loves herself no matter what. Also, I’m not the type of person that’d even be able to maintain a different public image, because it would exhaust me.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
All the poems I have shared in my book, Cherry Blossom Season, and all the poems I have shared online. Also, any future books I will write and publish. Every poem of mine tells a story about me; a mini memoir if you will. I hope my poems will remain, even when I’m gone.
